Sleep friendly pumps please

I have a 100gallon display with a 1" drain, 2x 1/2" returns. I am currently using an Iwaki MD55RLT that i have had setup for about a week. I am thinking of switching back to an internal/wet pump because this one puts off to much vibration and "hum" for me to sleep. The tank is located in my bedroom so i need something fairly quiet.

Any suggestions on a new pump that is sleep friendly?

I only talk from experience of having an Ehiem pump. I run a 1260 which puts out around 900gph at 4-5ft head.

So long as it is not resting against glass it is dead silent. Unless you put your ear onto the floor you could probably not tell it is on.

If it must rest against glass a silicone hot-pad or a few pieces of plastic tubing may act as a sufficient buffer.

The Velocity (aka Poseidon) pumps. They are water cooled, so they will add their heat to the water- no more than a submersible of the same wattage. They are dead silent- you need to touch them to see if they are on. I use a T1 on my 120-I would look for used ones here or on ebay- they are quality pumps and you can get a good deal on one.

The Poseidon sounds promising... That way i could keep my external pump plumbing with only minimal changes. Thanks guys for the input.

before you spend extra money, make sure you have the pump on something soft, like a soft placemat or something, also make sure it is not touching anything else that could vibrate.

That, and if you have rigid pvc running to and from it, switch to flex pvc or tubing.

I did plumb it in rigid pvc.. ill try replacing the couple feet of PVC near the pump with tubing. Thanks

Make sure you swap out both intake and output sides. Put a good noise dampening pad under the pump.

But Iwaki's are noisier than equivalent reeflo pumps. I've heard mixed on the Poseidons.

A Poseidon is dead silent. Not quiet, silent. An Iwaki is not even in the same league. Neither is a Reeflo. You have to use one to understand how dead silent they are. The only complaint Poseidon's get is they add heat to the water. As already posted, no more than the equivalent wattage submersible would.

BTW, 1/2" plumbing is far too small to use for returns. You should use 2 x 3/4" at a minimum.

Tunze submersible is the only way to go. Flows about the same as a Ehiem 1260 and much more quiet and probably less power. Can't remember the stats now. Check them out,best submersible on the market now IMO.

And he isn't joking when he says "dead silent". I have one that is about 6 years old, and it is still dead silent. If it wasn't for the water movement in the tank, couldn't tell that it was one. Can have your ear pretty much on the thing and still won't be able to hear it.

True. They dont have the high GPH models. The T4 is as big as they come. They are more suited for a return than a high GPH CL pump. It is something the first time you plug one in. The water starts flowing, but the pump sounds the same as it did before you plugged it in.

There are lots of different pumps types out there, each with its own ups and downs. For an external that is silent, that is the strength of the Velocity/Poseidon pumps. Oddly enough, I didn't get one for that reason. I got it because it is water cooled. My basement sump keeps my system very cool year round and my 600W of heaters are on a lot. I changed from the air cooled Mak4 to the T4 to capture the heat from the pump into the water column instead of sending it into the air. My heaters are not kicking in as often, making my system a little more efficient.

Yes. It has less flow than the Mak4 but it is fine. I had some flow T'd off the Mak4 to feed the fuge. I closed that off and feed the fuge with a maxijet now. That made up for much of it.

I am also looking for silent pump which can pump water throught chiller back to the tank. I got Eheim 1262 and I am hoping to use it externally. I don't want to get extra heat in my tank. Would Poseidon be a better choise noise and heat wise?

If you dont want heat from the pump, dont use the Poseidon or the Eheim. They are both water cooled pumps and will both add heat to the tank. Air cooled pumps are the way to go if heat is a concern. Air cooled pumps are generally noisier though.

The eheim can be run externally and does not heat water installed that way.

The Eheim is a water cooled pump cooled by internal water passages. Running it internal or external doesn't change that.

how much flow are you looking for? I run a dolphin amp master 3600 - silent with incredible flow. you can throttle the pump back and not hurt it...
