DH and I got a used 180gl tank with dual overflows. On the sides of each overflow are 4 holes about 1/4" in size. These holes are also on the inner wall of the overflow. These cause the overflow to never empty when the pump is off and causes the sump to overflow. Anyone know what or why those holes may have been drilled for. At this point we are going to plug them up so they don't cause a flood when the power goes out.

No clue what they're for. If it's an acrylic overflow, I would use a piece of acrylic and some Weldon (16 would be great for this) to slap a patch on the inside of the overflow so you can't see the patch. If it's glass, then you could easily get away with just filling the holes with silicone.

Are they only on one side of each overflow towards each other? If so, someone may have tried to connect the 2 overflows together. You should be able to seal them up with something.
