Small recirculating skimmer

I go out of town for work for several days at a time and it seems without fail my wife has a skimmer issue and it over flows or I come home and the skimmer has 2" of water and hasnt skimmed anything since I left, When I am home it works fine but does have to be dialed in after a water change or power interruption. I am currently useing a Reef Octopus XP1000SSS and I have a 75gal tank with about 100gal total volume and a light bio load (6 fish the biggest being a clown thats about 3" long). My solution would be to change to a smaller recirculating skimmer but the only 1 I have found is the Reef Octopus DNWB110 and it seems to get mixed reviews, any one have any other suggestions? Also I have a (probably stupid) question are all external skimmers recirculating?

Look into the Skimz line say the 160ish line, I believe that Aqua Ca e sells them.

Its external so I assume it wont be effected by water level height because its fed by another pump?

That is correct. Unless of course you have it in the sump and submerge it.
