small refugium- any need?

I have a 90 gallon and have a small( 2.5 gallon) HOB fuge. It has cheato growing nicely, and pods in multitude. I was wondering, if the ball of cheato in this application is serving any real purpose other than producing pods. Many pods also in the display.

I really want to remove it, as I feel it is making no huge difference in the nitrates, since the tank is a 90 if you know what I mean. Cheato is growing but just seems the volume of water does not make sense. Remove it or not? Thanks

I would go ahead and remove it for a month or so and see what happens. If some of your parameters start to jump, go ahead and put it back online. At least you'll know this way. As far as the pods go, if you don't have a specialized feeder such as a mandarin, I wouldn't worry about not having the refuge. The 90 other gallons will suffice.

Thanks. I'm going to do just that. No mandarin, although would be a great time to try one.
