Smokers and aquariums??

My aquarium is in our game/billiard room. Almost all my friends smoke ciggs while we play a few games every weekend. Sometimes its too cold to open the windows. Consequently, the room fills with smoke. Im worried that the smoke has a negative effect on the aquarium parameters and the livestock in it.

Is it something i need to really worry about. The aquarium has a hood, but im sure the smoke touches the surface of the water through the hole in the hood (which accomodates the skimmer).

Thanks:beer:

IME it hasnt had any negative effects on my tank(s). I smoke and everyone around me smokes. I have open-top tanks as well. 3 years of smoking right next to my tank and nothing bad has happened.

I wouldn't think it is to big of a problem if it isn't all of the time. Just keep an eye on things. If nothing is bothered, don't worry about it. You may concider buying an Ionic Breeze (or knockoff) which will "eat" the smoke.

You do need to worry if you fish start asking you for thier own cigs though.. =)

It never ceases to amaze me that people care more about the health of their fish than their friends. I wouldn't allow smoking in my house much less near my tank.

Please keep judgements limited to waterworks and away from humans?:smokin:

If you're not seeing any ill effects then I wouldn't really sweat it. When the weather permits, I think its a good idea for everyone to open up the windows and get lots of fresh air for the tank and themselves.

Just make sure you only smoke plants, and none of that crack! Cause crack is wack.

Though Shagsbeard does have a good point! But I'll stay away from adding fuel to the fire on that topic. ;)

LOL...crack is whack indeed. Thanks for the responses guys. Very helpful. I hate smokers and smoking. Yet, i smoke when im drinking so its kind of a double standard.

Chain smoker for years, hasn't hurt my tank yet, and it's in a very small room with my TV, so I'm about 2 feet away from the tank and that room does fill up quickly. I do have a window AC unit in there as well and keep it on almost year round with the outside air vent opened up, so that may make a difference.

And I don't mind adding fuel on this fire.....I don't have a single friend that wouldn't put their cig out if I asked them to, so it's not that they care less or anything, just what they can get away with. And might I add, I find this hobby far more addicting. First time in a long time I have to consider quiting smoking just to support another more addictive monkey on my back....corals. :D
