CO2 in house increase, im aware of. what about the hand that holds the cig? i smoke, and just thought of this. how much nicotine residue is on my fingers when i rinse them and then place them in the tank/sump? how would it effect the chemistry? i noticed during cleaning today, my fingers had a stronger aroma of smoke after i had them in the tank. just courious. thanx & REEF-ON!

There have been reports of second hand smoke and nicotine adversly affecting the tank chemistry and poisoning the tank. These poisons can enter the tank redily via your air intake on your protein skimmer. Considering the cost involved in a reef tank I would suggest smoking outside or in a designated room of the house with plenty of windows. Now take this with a grain of salt but as a nurse I would have to reccoment not smoking at all and put your money you save from quitting in a jar and invest it in your reef system!!! Just think you'll have a better looking tank, better looking lungs and you'll feel better in the long run. But man let me tell you, those first three weeks are a [profanity]!!! I used to smoke 3 packs a day! By the way yall have a nice city. Bass pro is one of the better ones Ive seen. If you havent been there I reccomend it and check out the rain forest cafe in the opposite wing of the mall. They have some nice fish only salt aquariums.

Madreefer, 1012 times out of 100 most suggestions telling the smoker they need to quit go unheeded because their hearing stopped just after they lit up, but I'm sure you are already aware of that being that you are a nurse.

i quit a 16 year cocain addiction and 19 years of alcohol abuse in one day, cold turkey. i havent touched either in 6 years. two weeks of halicinations without drugs or alcohol was a trip! lol! but smoking has got to be hardest of the three. REEF-ON!

Yeah, I quit coke, weed, alcohol, and nobody told me I needed to, I just knew it was bad for me and all my money was going to IT. I am sure you know smoking is bad for you too but are you man/woman enough to quit? HHHMMMMMM. Don't care if it's "the hardest addiction" there is.

Reefnetworth,

I too am a smoker and wash my hands before putting them in the tank. My tank room is actually my smoking room (though I do smoke in the kitchen as well.) As for how it affects the chemistry, I'm not really sure. I am aware that nicotine is poisonous, though I don't know the amount required to cause harm to a fish tank.

Does this hobby attract addicitive personalities? Never thought I would quit a 30 year reefer habit. One night in the slammer worked like magic.

Why even smoke in your house? You stink up the house, smell the carpet and clothes, and ruin the walls and worst, your tank.

Smoking is not good for your lungs or your tank, computers also.

At least, take a nice smoke outside in your back yard.

ive been a couple of times, vicmiller. i guess i was hardheaded. that or a dedicated addict. lol! mine were all alcohol related. assault, public intoxication, and DUI. my dad was very millitary (Viet-Nam) and a drinker also. fighting was lifestyle till i broke the trend. woke up one morning with the usual shakes and pukeing, and said "i've had enough" quit that second. never to return. happier then ive ever been. so is my wife! REEF-ON!
