Smoking Ballast

I tried to save some $....bought a used URI by IceCap ballast on eBay. We wired it up tonight, mounted it in the canopy, ect...about 2 hours worth of work. When we plugged it in the wiring started smoking!

I looked back at the auction on eBay and the wiring harness I was sent was not the one in the pictures. I am a little frustrated right now.

All the wiring was correct...I am sure of that. I don't really feel that safe about it now since it was smoking. Is it possible to replace just the wiring harness? I don't know that I want to do that.

The wiring harness they sent me was terrible. It had been spliced and taped up and a lot of duct tape right at the connector. Here is a pic...

Any advice? I have already emailed him about it. Is the ballast salvageable or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now.

IceCap wiring harnesses are available for purchase separately, but to be sure you get an answer you can count on I suggest you ask over in the IceCap forum where the both the President of IceCap and the guy who runs their service department hang out.

well im sry about your misfortune...honestly....i would try and get my money back and buy something new. unless you are running an insurance scam? just let er burn...hahaha, good luck

even if the ballast is bad, you can send it to icecap and i think it's like 75 bucks if they have to repair it. Wiring harnesses are easily found and any lighting sponsor on the forum.

I think I am going to buy a new one. I do not trust this one anymore. Hopefully the guy from eBay will step up to the plate. I think when it comes to wiring I won't cut corners. :)

Jason,

Thanks for the advice. I went to the IceCap forum and posted there. I will probably send the unit in or order a new wiring harness depending on their advice!

jamie, since your using it for actinic supplement and will only have 2, it may be even safer and less messy to pull the wires and ends you're not using right out of the plastic harness once you get it going.

(saw icecap post and figured they may not like the idea of things getting pulled apart so posted here.

Jason,

I already capped the wires I am not using out. I got tired of messing with it and sent it off today. Hopefully it is repairable. The people at IceCap are so nice. I am thrilled with their customer service! Thanks for the suggestion!
