snail confusion

Why is there so much confusion and/or lack of knowledge around snail species? I can't find any fish stores that actually know what species of snails they are selling. If I ask "what species of snail is this?" and they respond "Turbin" or "Turbo". That's like me asking a pet store "what species of dog is this?" and they respond "Canine". Telling me it's a snail doesn't help very much. Doesn't anyone know/care about snails?

The short answer is not really. We're all trying to get a handle on IDing the corals we keep.
And truth be known. Regardless of what someone tells you.We don't even know for certain what particular spieces most of our corals are. So the least of our worries is a snail. I mean snails aren't exactly anything to get excited about. Lol

Snails are difficult to tell apart sometimes
It's not a huge deal which kind of snail it is, usually
Snails have different common names for same species
They're really just not that interesting
Take your pick!

There are tons of snail experts in the world. Most of them work somewhere other than fish stores, and most don't keep reef tanks. :)

Yeah, I care about snails. I'm all about the snails, hermits, etc... That's the big surprise for me after starting my reef tank. I find the inverts to be very interesting to watch. The micro activity of the tank is amazing. I love it when I see a little isopod scurry across a rock, a asterina star crawling along, or whatever.

Start researching about the snails and you should be able to identify most of the snails you run into on sight... although probably not down to the individual species, but know the genus or general variety. I know most of the commonly sold snails by sight.

The mexican turbo snail is fairly common at pet stores. Are you saying you want to know which individual species of the turbo genus you are looking at?

Looking at that might illuminate the situation... I have a "turbo snail" and I think I could tell if a snail was a "turbo snail" or lets contrast and say a "Cerith". I have two florida ceriths in my tank.

"That's like me asking a pet store "what species of dog is this?"" Technically all dogs are the same species and can interbreed... Canis lupus familiaris...They are just different breeds of the same species... So his answer would have been pretty accurate. ;-)
