Snail depressed?

Hey all,

I've had my tank up for almost four weeks, now -- 37-gal, 40 pounds live rock. The initial cycle is complete and I'm ready to add a clean up crew. I added an advanced crew of four hermits, a tiny snail and a big snail (I think it might be some kind of whelk). Anyway, the whelk guy was ridiculously active for the first few days but since he discovered the glass, he's just decided to hang out at the water surface, shell partially out, without moving at all. Is that normal snail behavior, or might something be wrong with the water parameters? I was planning on bringing in the rest of the crew tomorrow, but I don't want to have a bunch of unhappy inverts.

My Ammonia and nitrates are 0
and Nitrates are 20. PH=8.2. SG=1.022.

Also, do you need to feed the hermits?

depending on the type of snail some do hang out at water level and some even go as far as all the way out and down the other side.

It could also be a temperature break in the tank. What's the temp of the tank? The higher up you go in the tank the warmer the water gets b/c of the lighting and of course b/c heat rises. Just my .02.

Feeding the hermits is ok... but you don't really need to. They'll get plenty off your live rocks, and left overs once you get fish going. They don't even need the leftovers.

How's your circulation? The snail might like it at the surface because scum is collecting there. Improving circulation will help if that's the cause.

Thanks, everyone.

Flow is good, no scum on top. My lights don't affect my temp -- it stays at 80. As for acclimation, did a crude drip method, floating the bag on the water and adding a bit of tank water every 10 minutes for about 1.5 hrs. The crabs and the other snail all seem fine. If this one snail is a whelk, I've read they don't eat algae. Maybe it's hungry?? my critters seem to be doing fine, but this guy doesn't seem to want any part of it.

Anyway, I got the rest of the c.u. crew today -- 10 astreas two turbos and three more hermits. So, we'll see. . .
