I have a neon dottyback that's about four inches, and looks like he always has a fool belly. I have also noticed that I don't seem to have as many snails as I used to have. Is it possible that he is eating them?
It's highly possible. From what I've read, neon dottybacks are death on inverts. If he isn't the culprit, any hermit crabs you have might be--they kill snails for their shells. But I'd be willing to bet that your dottyback is eating them.
I have a Neon dottyback that would kill even some of the big snails that I had. Once removed no more dead snails. After 5 or 6 big snails at $3 a pop the dottyback had a new house in my sump.
