Hi Guys,
Got these little fellas in some coral and inverts I picked up today. Not too sure what they are, I've had a look around. Any ideas? Atm i only have turbos and hermits. some of these guys will probably be some variant of a common snail and ill hit my head against the wall for not knowing :headwally: I could start putting names to them based on my research but lets be honest I have no idea and there's too much risk introducing an unknown species. Also in thinking of all this I wanted to know if all predatory snails are considered bad (which is my assumption here). I know we use Narc snails a lot but that's based on them primarily being scavengers (which I would believe would put them in the category of cleaning up left over brine etc from feeding). Are there other predatory snails that will also be supplemented in this way thus not having them attack their usual target. I am not going to use this reason to put something in my tank that I shouldn't however it just interests me none the less.
They are all sitting in the QT tank until I can confirm what they are.
Hitchhiker 1 (10-15mm Long)
I believe I have answered my own question. I'm thinking it is an Ilyanassa obsolete. And after the quick read up on them and a nice post I am hesitating on putting it in the tank http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1928909 . The hermits apparently came from Cairns AUS and indeed this hitchhiker too. I have seen mixed review on the safety of the snail too. I don't know of the likelihood of this worm. But any answers would be appreciated. For now he will remain in QT until I find out more.
Hitchhiker 2 - Unknown (10 - 15mm long)
This little guy has a rather large tube section shell from its center, I would assume it is for proboscis or siphon but imp not sure as based on the short time I've had him he hasn't moved at all. I don't know if that defines that its nocturnal too. Assuming its a predator of some sort.
Hitchhiker 3 - Cerith? (10 - 15mm Long)
Quite confident in these little guys. There is three of them and they are algae eaters have already been going nuts on the QT tank glass. Just want to confirm their species for the list.
Hitchhiker 4 - (8-10mm Long)
Sorry I cannot get a very good photo on this guy, he just looks like he's up to trouble though as why he's not even allowed into QT he's just in the acclimation tank atm. He's quite small and has its siphon out constantly searching. Its a red/pink underbody with a black or grey/white dotted top of its flesh. It also has a stripped antennae and siphon. It has a cowrie like shell in appearance. The last photo here is of him on another snail when I first got them.
Overall I'm thinking no 3 appear ok and the other guys have to go, but ill await the experts input on that before we say goodbye.
If there's any other photos or info I can provide please just let me know.
Also forgive me if some of the comments seem naïve even after much research there are still so many questions every day in this hobby!! :reading:
Regards, Cody.
