Snail on clam

This morning when I checked the tank just as the lights came on. I found the clam was still closed and had several small white conical snails hanging out right around the mantle area. I take it these are bad and a dip is needed?

NO not a dip. any other clams in the system?
you need to isolate the clam and do a complete scrub of it with a toothbrush.
a pic of the snails? hope you took them off. most likely pyramidal snails and very bad!
pm for a link to the entire process, as rc doesn't want other sites mentioned. takes about 3 weeks but can and should be very successful. i did it with 9 clams, qting each from the rest in tupperware and all are completely fine.

Im having the same problem with my gigas. About 40 or 50 very small ones every night when the light go off. I could use the link.

PM sent.

It was only about 6-7 on the clam and yes I removed them and scrubbed the clam in Lugol's (which didn't kill the snails btw). I read a six line will eat them, I wonder if my candy hog will get along with a six line?

Your probaby right :( They look like small grain of rice. Can you post pic?
Smaller Twinspot and leapord wrasse do a good job , but will flipover everything in your tank as they get some size to them.
Sixlines can be very mean critters- each fish has its own personality..
Remove the clam 2-3 times a week, before lights come on. You can use toothbrush to help remove snails.

Fish are NOT an efficient means of control for the snails, as the snails are nocturnals and fish will sleep at night.
After 2-3 hours of lights out (tank must be dark), remove the clam and go over it with a soft bristled tooth brush. take care not to damage or scrub the bysal area too much. use a toothpick or a bbq stick to go through the scutes. use a flash light and rinse accordingly.
if you have substrate the snails may be on the sand as well so it may help to vacuum the sand around the clam.
Repeat the process every 2 days until you see no more snails. After you see none, inspect it a week or two later just in case any have been left out.

can someone explain why the snails are a bad thing? Are they eating the clam slowly over time? Because i have a little grouping around the base of my clam and it looks very healthy and wide open.
thanks,
Nate

pyramidal snails will eat the mantle.
what is the' little grouping around the base of my clam' doing, is it visible during the day, do the snails move up after lights out, how many snails, what size? pic is necessary for positive i d.
you say, it looks very healthy and wide open. well that's b/c either the snails are NOT pyr snails [hope for your sake] or they have not yet done enough damage. pyr snails climb up when lights are out and retreat after morning.
to i d, look at the swirling on the shell from the tiny tip upwards, if the swirl is perpendicular, not angled, to the tip, then chances are, you need to treat the clam and fast. i can send a link for this if you pm me. or jared or william above can forward it to you.

from what i see the snails never move. I can only see them at night because the clam closes up and the base is exposed, but they are always in the same spot. And the lines appear to angle to the tip.

nevermind i just found an article by james fatherree saying these clams if they move at night eat the mantle and if they are stationary all the time then they are like leeches and just suck nutrients from the clam which will kill small clams in a matter of days but takes longer on big ones. So no matter what you need to scub them off. Guess thats what ill be doing in the morning.
thanks guys for your help though,
Nate

these snails are persistent and create longterm problems in small clams. Bigger clams seem to have them as well but are more commensal.

The clam does seem to open more now, and I did find another one on it last night. I know the clam is probably getting ticked off being pulled out of the tank every night.

+1
if you are not dumping the sand under the clam, consider the work and time completely wasted, sorry to say. snails will also stay in the sand near their host. try putting it in some sand in a tupperware container, that way, you can dump the sand each time.
and every other night is better. remember to burp the clam after replacing it.

Where do these come from anyway? Are they usually hitchikers in the clams or come in on other corals? I did notice that the Lugol's did nothing to the snails, and I dip all new corals.

they will come from 1 on a clam that hasn't been properly qt'd, or an unlikely hitchiker since they do not go far from their eggsack under the clam.
they multiply like the bstrds they are.
