A couple of my snails are lying on there back with there bottoms up. I thought that maybe they were dead but they move when I mess with them, all of my water parameters are fine. Whats up?
flip them back over. Several of the snail species we use cant right themselves when they fall.
It becomes a regular thing... wake up, feed the fish, right the snails, feed the dog, drive to work, drive home, feed the fish, right the snails, stare at tank, go to bed.......
The hermits are opportunists, and if they spot a snail stuck in the sand they can quickly dispatch it. The snail doesnt even have to be helpless they'll kill it any way. Hermits are more trouble than they're worth IMO.
out of my cleanup crew consisting of hermits, margarita, cerith, and nassarius snails... all the margaritas died within the first 2 months... the rest are all fine. i noticed if i caught them right when they were on their back and righted them they would be fine. if they were on their back for too long though either a fish or hermit would attack and they would eventually die... try the turbo snails for glass cleaning... i believe they can right themselves.
Thats way too many nassarius, they are carion feeders. A small number can survive off scraps left over from fish feeding, but with that many you will need to dump in extra food to keep them healthy otherwise they will starve. I wouldnt put more than 10 in a tank with the footprint of a 90 gallon.
