snails ate my clam

i purchased a small crocea clam on saturday. soon after i put it in the water i noticed one of the nassarius snails on the shell, so i removed it. when i checked it about an hour later there were 3 snails on it. they seemed to be going for the underside of the clam. i moved them off again. by that evening it was clear it was not going to make it. there were several snails on and in it and also hermit crabs. i am not sure why. it looked healthy and reacted to the light.
i want to get another one but i am not sure if it is something i did. any ideas?

I don't think a nassarius snail would eat a living crocea clam. I have over 100 nassarius in my tank and have 2 croceas that they have never bothered. Not sure what may have caused its death

I have many nassarius snails in my tank and they are always on my clams, sometimes they are on the mantle where it hangs off the shell. Never had any problem. I think the clams are used to it because they don't seem to react to them.

Lighting?
Where was it placed in the tank?
How did you acclimate it?
How did they remove it from the tank in the store? I have seen people in stores rip the threads right off of whatever they have attached to.:mad2:

i have a 90 gal tank with (2) 250w mh's and a 65w actinic. i drip acclimated for about 1.5 hrs and i placed it on a shell at the bottom of the tank. i wanted it to attach to the shell then i could place it where ever i want in the tank. the store just got them i recently so i dont think they had attached to anything . they were in the sand at the store but i didnt watch them bag it.
