well i live in ft lauderdale and took up snorkeling last year after being in the sw hobby for a few years...the question i have is where are some good places to go?? the only place i ever go to is off datura since its 5 mins from my house ...any suggestion???

Quick thought . . . as a marine biologist, I can also tell you that if you are looking for fish, head to the Arrowjacks just north of Dania Pier . . . find a "jack" on the beach (looks like one that children play with only about 4 ft tall) and head directly offshore . . . you can find lots of different types of animals . . .

You could also try the Dry Tortugas national park down off of Key west, Plan for a whole day adventure though, you need to take a ferry to the park and no overnight camping is allowed, there are a couple of nice reefs right off of shore.

Hi,
Dry Tortugas is beautiful, but if you are looking to collect things for the tank, it is not allowed there since it is a national park. The EroJacks are nice, but it is VERY hard to catch fish there, no where to get them cornered! There are some inverts of interest. You might want to try off of Sea Ranch Lakes.
Thanks,
Renee

What is Sea Ranch Lakes? a public beach?
How far off shore would you have to go to find anything of interest?
Thanks...

Hi,
Sorry it took me so long to reply. The guy that used to live across the street would go there some times. He would go diving, but said that if you could hold your breath long enough that you might be able to collect something. I have ear problems so if I am not diving, I can only snorkel to about 10 ft - 12 ft. I dont remember how deep he said that it was, but it was deeper than that. He said that it is an area off the Ft. Lauderdale beach about 1/2 mile out. I have not been there.

Sea Ranch Lakes is a little town on A1A just north of Commercial Blvd. and before Atlantic Blvd. I'm orig. from Pompano Beach, and our school's "hang out" beach was right there at what used to be the Howard Johnson's on the beach (just north of Commercial). There are also some interesting places north of Hillsboro inlet, and some close in patch reefs on up towards Boca.

After reading another post, I believe that it is also called Datura Beach.
