snorkeling

Hello, I enjoy Hawaii. Im going there in April to Maui. The reefs in Hawaii are great. It a long distance from where i live here in Ohio but its worth it.

Try snorkeling in Greece, nice blue water in Greece (in islands with low populations of poeple).

I go spearfishing there

I typically vacation in Key Largo FL. We have a boat, dive gear and all that though. I think itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s a local understanding that if you donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have a boat, dive, snorkel, or fish it can be very boring.

The most beautiful water I have ever seen was outside of Cancun Mexico. We went all over Cozumel Mexico, Xcaret Mexico, Tulum Mexico, Akumal Mexico. All these locations are close by and is absolutely a post card picture everywhere you look. The beaches are the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. You might spot some nudists, but that is not the highlight. As soon as we flew into Cancun we immediately got out of there ~ way too touristy. There is sooooo much to do in Mexico, but be careful out in the sun, I got blistered literally even in the winter. I have never felt sun like that in my life, not even in the Keys in the summer.

There are beautiful lagoons to explore, under water caves that are fresh water springs meeting the ocean, iguanas running around, little lizards and I have never met such kind people in my life! They are so polite and helpful. Children will sit in front of your car ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œall dayââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ to keep an eye on it for you for just a few bucks (sad but true). The beaches are like sugar and the food is amazing! Youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll be dieing for a cheeseburger in about a week though. Itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s definitely a worth while vacation.

hawaii reefs are badly damaged :( (except for a few spots harder to reach)
too many tourists there and they would dive down to pick corals

very sad indeed

Just got back from the Caymans and I enjoyed the snorkeling. Went out on a very small boat which was great to get away from the bit tourist groups (just 5 of us). Great vacation, direct flights from Metro.

Went snorkeling last September at Philipsburg, St. Maarten in the Caribbean. We kayaked for a mile or so, then snorkeled for about 45 minutes. It was really great, the water is very clear. We were in about 15-20 ft about 100 yds offshore. One of the guides had a loaf of french bread and was pulling pieces off and feeding the fish. I took a look down and there were hundreds of fish swimming all around us....lots of fun.

Tips? If you are getting into the water from the shore, it is sometimes easier to walk backwards into the water. I know this sounds crazy, but your fins are bent down at the ends and it's easy to stumble walking forward.

Another tip: don't do what I did and dip your head down into the water to get a better look at something....you may find yourself unexpectedly breathing saltwater

Going to Jamaica, Caymans, and Cozumel this September....should be fun!!!!

Playa Del Carmen in the Mayan Riveria (hours drive south of cancun) has the reef fifty or so yards off shore so no boat needed. Like Randy said Xcaret is an ecological park where they filmed alot of the movie "Blue Lagoon" I dont think you will find better snorkeling anywhere.

I think, if you want something close then Marathon FL is a good place to start. Also Bonair or Curcacao are really nice for a week stay. When you get back post some pics of your trip.

Dive Safe

If you ever have the oppurtunity to visit the South Pacific do so. A few years ago, my wife and I while on a cruise snorkeld in Bora Bora, Raietta, Tahiti, and Moorea. In fact that experience is what inspired me to set up my first reef tank. If you are able to go, bring a underwater video camera with you. Otherwise you will never remember all that you have seen and will give you the reference to describe it. By the way, just saw the IMAX Deep Sea 3D movie. A must see for all the reefers out there.
