Snowflake Clowns

I love the snowflake var. of the clownfish. Anyone have any good information on where to buy them. I know liveaquaria is selling a pair, but $500 sounds like a little bit of a rip off. Also does anyone know what a snowflake clowns parents are? Are they also snowflakes or are they just normal clowns? Thanks everyone!

The mostly white variant of ocellaris clownfish? All these people and all this knowledge here and nobody has any input?

if you do a search on rc. you will find much info on the snowflakes.

but here is a brief synopsis for you :

the captive bred "snowflake" comes from a breeder in england that is very secretive about the genetic lineage. currently no one knows what the parents are, atleast from what im aware of. many speculate osc. dominance. but its still a mystery. this breeder is also very selective about releasing them. you can purchase a pair from some good lfs/online dealers, but expect to pay on average $500. i think in the next couple years, the price will drop significantly bec of F1 generation being produced by current snowflake owners and the demand from the original breeder will be less.

check out my www. you can see my pair there.

my intuition tells me the white pattern on these snowflakes is very dominate and will appear in many of its offsprings, evenif paired up with other varieties. only time will tell............

good luck in your endeavor..

I wish the breeder would share his knowledge of this hobby, that is one of the reasons I like reefing so much! Ow well, different strokes for different folks I guess. Thanks though.

It's not just "a breeder". It is a commercial hatchery. TMC, is one of the first to breed the black ocellaris as well. There is no "secret". Best they can do is sell the offspring so others can try to get the same results.
Rumor has it that the pair that produce the snowflakes are normal looking ocellaris. The rumor is they were bought from a breeder in Holland once it was discovered that a small percentage of their offspring would be snowflakes.

thanks for the elaboration phender. but like you said, its a "rumor", have you seen any definitive info ? seems they are making effort not to disclose parental stock.

Based on what we DO know about mis-barred clowns there is an extremely high probability that only a very small percentage of each clutch will be radiacally mis-barred.

There is almost no chance that F1 will create a large number snowflake misbars. You can be pretty sure that if that were the case there would be many more on the market. TMC is a commercial hatchery and would be using F1 stock if they were producing a large number of snowflake offspring.

Phender is definitely correct. My LFS in Ireland is stocked solely by TMC and they have the odd snowflake individual for sale. Last one went for only â"šÂ¬100, no pairs so far round here.

I wasn't tying to correct you, just trying to help out ReeferMo85.

I respect them trying to keep their exclusive hold on the snowflakes. I'm sure its just a matter of time before ORA or some independent gets some to breed. It's not like they are some individual doing this on the side. I'm sure they have investors to pay etc. Its not like they are neutering the fish before they sell them (at least I don't think they are :D). We are just going to have to try to breed the one they are letting out.

phender

im sorry no offence taken. :) somtimes typed words dont portray intent :) i appreciate the elaboration :) but you taught me some things i did not know about the snowflakes.

so i thank you !

I've learned more in this post than in extensive research on google. I appreaciate it. Also a guy at my LFS said that probably all of the snowflake variant are sterile and can't produce anyways. Your thoughts...
