Snowflake eel

So I have a new tank a aquaone reef 400 it has been set up and in the first stages of cycling, I had the tank set up for three weeks empty an adding a little fish food to get the cycling started, then I brought 24 kg of live rock and added it to cycle with that, that was a week ago. Then this weekend I took a sample of water to the LFS to be tested and the ammonia has spiked and there are nitrates (so they told me) I also saw the perfect flat round piece of live rock (2kg) that's perfect to make a cave with so I brought that as well, I know this could prolong the cycling but even thou I can't wait to add some fish I am not in a hurry I want to do this right from the beginning. I have a 150L tank that I brought as a already set up cycled tank with stock but being a fresh water tank converted to a marine and having bits stuck on everywhere it's messy looking and not big enough for a lot of fish I like. I have also had some problems with temp control in the summer and making some rookie mistakes so I went and brought this marine tank + chiller + UV filter and I want to do it right from the start and then move my current fish over and get rid of the other tank.
Anyway so yesterday I put the new rock in and today I did a water change as my tank was a little to salty so added some fresh water (I have a dodgie salinity tester and am buying a refractometer)

Anyway so the thing is today after doing a water change a little about 15-20cm snowflake eel swam out of my rocks and did a few laps of the tank, I already really like this guy but am worried about his health being in such new not cycled tank! He could of already been there a week or a day I don't know, he seems pretty happy has already dug out a little den and was just chilling in his hole with his head out, when I moved my fingers on the glass he came out further like he was hungry so I went and brought a prawn and chopped it up and dropped a bit in he could obviously smell it and went crazy swimming around the tank so I got another tiny piece and held it with long forceps and held it near to where he was swimming and he ate it with vigour so I got another piece and he ate that as well, then was swimming around a fair bit and has since settled back down into a hole. I guess my question is what do I do with him? Do I leave him since he may of already been in the tank a week now or do I try and catch him and take him back? That may be hard and require pulling my whole tank apart. He doesn't seem stressed but may of only been in there a day.

This little guy was a hitch hiker? That's pretty awesome =). what I would do get get an API (or better) master marine test kit from petco or petsmart and test the parameters yourself, make sure to read the directions thoroughly because some of the solutions need to be mixed very well or they will not give you proper readings, this happend to me and almost lost some fish due to extremely high nitrates... If the parameters are unsafe for the eel then I would either make a small QT tank or just a smaller established marine tank for him if you have another filtration type like canister filter/ hang on back filter even pre established live rock and keep him there till cycle completes. It doesn't have to be fancy even bare bottom with pcv pieces for cave, filtration, heater and power head in small tank will suffice, he's small so it won't take much to keep him happy. Keep us posted!!! =)

I know! No one was more surprised than I was to find this guy this morning in my tank! I do have another set up and established tank I wasn't sure if I should put him in there or not, he already has a burrow and looks real happy in there, he is obviously a fighter coz the rock was out of the water for the trip home and we stopped off for food on the way back ( at least 30 mins from shop to home) I am surprised he even lived! I was going to have shrimp in my tank (eventually) but if this guy makes it I will have to change my plans! I have already named him Olaf lol.

Man this is so cool!!! What are the odds he survived that's nuts! Looks like you have to keep him now because its such a cool story, I name my fish too, they become part of the family :)

Snowflake eel

I am going to keep him just hope he makes it! I already have two ocellaris clown fish (male and female), a banggai cardinal and a coral beauty, do u think they will be okay with him? These are in my other tank not in with him ATM obviously

I think ultimately you would be worried about him with them when he gets large enough to eat them, however it he's raised with them he may never be tempted, I have seen tanks with large snow flake eels with small fish with no issues but Ite probably less common then we would like to see, the clown is natural prey I believe. but since the eel is so small I wouldn't stress it until he's large enough to fit one of these guys in his mouth wich will take a while :)

Eels are most active at night

Is your tank covered? These little guys are great escape artists, and it'd be a shame for him to get this far, and then end up carpet surfing.

Nobody questioned the anemone in the photo of the 'hitchhiker eel'.

I had a snowflake eel in my tank (10 years ago) for over a year, the only issue I had was the stuff it knocked around. It never messed with fish or inverts. Eventually died by carpet surfing.

This time around no eel for me.

Are u talking about the anemone in my picture? From what I can see my picture didn't work, it's a fake insert thing the only "live" stuff I have in my tank is the rock and the hitch hikers that came with it, no anemones well none that I can see yet anyway they may grow of course

I fed him again tonight he's a super hungry little guy with a good appetite, I really hope he makes it! I only gave him a few pieces of prawn and he swam out after my hand for more! He also seems very at home in his burrow he has made

good to hear! I wish I could have one they are so different then most fish but my puffer would probably have it for a snack.. =/

That is a cool eel! You got a good surprise......I had one for 10yrs and had to trade him in after he reached 30" in my old 75G Always feed shrimp NEVER gold fish!!!! Enjoy!!!

Just letting you all know my tank has finished cycling and water is good and my little snowflake eel is doing well, he's eating heaps and looks happy in my tank, I didn't think he would make it but this little guy is a fighter!

Just an update my snowflake eel who is now named Olaf is still going well, he has grown a bit too, and now has my clowns in there as tank mates
