Snowflakes, and Hermits

Well I don't have an over flow or sump. Come tax return time I plan on getting one. I keep reading on them and seeing if I could make one but the more I read the more confused I get.

I have an opening on the back of mine that is about an inch or so but my filter runs back there and I have seen him swimming around up there late at night. From what I've heard you should keep it very tight as they will jump out but hasn't happened to me yet.

Guess the trip to ND was too far for ya...told ya you could have mine but you would have to come and fish him out.

Good luck and any more questions let me know.

use a plastic mesh over your overflow, and keep the tank covered good. we have lost a few eels at work even when we "thought" the tanks were totally covered. they are sneakey little buggers.

My Eel escaped!

My Eel escaped!

Early this morning I went to my aquarium, and found my Snowflake Eel on the floor behind it. Guess what? He was still alive! Close call. No more little hole for easy escapabilty for him!

I think eel in a mixed tank is a nightmare waiting to happen I had one in my aggressive tank for about 6 months then all of a sudden he was killing everything in the tank he cost me hundreds of dollars it was during feeding time he just got more and more aggressive to the point that as soon as food hit the water he was out violently attacking everything in the tank that moved. he killed several large triggers 2 lions a puffer and others.

When I first got my snowflake eel, he didn't eat for about 3 months before he became interested in food. Now, I hand feed him a piece of shrimp that you buy forzen from the grocery store about every 2-3 days. He let's me know that he is hungry by swimming around the surface of the tank. Sometimes, I dangle the piece of shrimp just at the surface of the water, so he can smell it. Then, once he starts coming up for the shrimp, I bring the piece of shrimp a few inches out of the water, and he actually comes out of the water to get the shirmp, then goes back down. Once, I woke up found my eel on the floor. Probably was like 3-4 hours out of the tank, started to stink up the whole room, quickly picked him up and put him back in the tank, and he was back to normal in a matter of minutes. He also hasn't bothered any of my hermits, emerald crab or my cleaner shrimps. You'll really enjoy having a snowflake eel. Good Luck.

I had a snowflake for 1.5 years. I never witnessed nor saw the decline of any hermits in my 46 bowfront. I fed mine something every day. He seemed to eat more the bigger he got. I had an open top tank. He would make me think he was going to jump, but never did. I fed a diet of your regular carnivorous meats (krill, scallops, shrimp, live goldfish). Live foods seem to evoke the predatory skills of the eel, very entertaining. A very neat specimine.

No dead hermits here

Happy to hear your eel made it threw the carpet surfing fine. Mine is still swimming along happy. It's the dang big hermit crab of mine that's being the trouble maker but he does such a wonderful job of keeping the sand bed clean...I just can't get rid of him.

Pooh

Poh, what kind of Hermit crab do you have. I have 14 Starry hermits. One of them is the size of a raquetball. I have near 20 large Hermits, and a lot of little blue legged Hermits. The keep the tank clean!
