So how much was your custom stand and canopy?

<10K?
Between 10K-20K?
>20K??

Which category would you fall in?

I'm asking because I don't know what to expect.....at least I thought I had a good idea in my head, but apparently I'm pretty far off.
Kind of like when I thought I could pick up a bunch of 20 foot pieces of wood and that it should be a piece of cake to put it in the garage.....not so easy.

How much was yours (ballpark figure) and can I see a picture? I just want to get a better feel for where I should be, and if I am just too expensive in my taste. Did it include delivery?

Also, any regrets? Did you wish you were more or less elaborate?

Thanks so much for any input!

Understandably, some may not feel comfortable talking about cost.

Maybe I can just tell a little bit more about my specific situation and ask if you agree with below:

This is for a bookcase style tank build that will support a 280 gallon tank.

Now I looked online at a vendor that sells a bookcase style tank with stand and canopy (300 gallon) for $14K.

Is that around what I should expect for that type of style? I know there are multiple factors that affect cost, but I just want a range of + or - $5K so I have some sort of reference point.

Again, thanks to all that have input.

Thanks Eric, I appreciate the info. I really didn't know how else to go about this because I don't know anyone that have not purchased manufactured stands or had friends build their stand and went the custom size route. The woodworkers don't see these projects often either so I needed a reference point for what I wanted to do.

My completed length of the stand is estimated to be 12 foot. Since I didn't know anything at all about wood and building, I thought this could be completed in detail for under 10K with exotic wood.

I wanted to find out if I was thinking reasonably or not, and to find out what my revised estimate should be based on others.

Thank you again!

the stand and canopy on my 300 cube was just about 4000 $. it was custom made by the guy who does all the woodwork in my house and is made out of mahogany, wengi, and walnut. quality woodworking will always set you back more than you think it will. good work means lots of time spent making it.

skanderson: Thank you for your input. Did you post a picture of it? I see a red X and would love to see how yours was done.

I was looking into Walnut as well. The choices were Teak, Walnut, Honduran or African Mahagony. However, teak came out to 4-6X the cost of the rest of them.

My smaller cube I am having done (150 gallon Marineland) will be using reclaimed wood as the support and Mahagony skin.
I was hoping to do the same with the bigger build.

Also, your cost seems very reasonable for the wood and size you describe.....at least compared to the quotes I have received for my 150 gallon.

Also, I don't mind the cost for quality woodworking. I was having a hard time with a reference point, which seems to have helped with the posts, both public and private.

The other problem I am having is the cost in relation to other high priced items in the house. It's that same feeling when you spend $$$$ for liverock. 'You spent HOW much on rock?' Not diamonds, sapphire, ruby, other gems........but live rock that looks like cement from the backyard.....

Hahhaa...but I guess many would argue there is no utility in paying large sums of money for a small stone that does nothing exept look pretty.

I was about 3k for my 280 but the stand was DIY
My 180 is about 1500 again the stand is Diy but with maple hardwood
