so i go to get an urchin, and this is what i come back with...

Good thing you're taking it back I would be so paranoid having that thing around. The fact that it's so good at getting out of confinement and so deadly at the same time. Kinda like a MacGyver-Jack Bauer clone.

LOL. Greatest line ever. Im glad your taking that thing back... octos are hard to keep as pets... dont do well in aquaria from what I understand... then there is the whole VENOMOUS KILLER TENTACLES thing.... a no brainer if you asked me. :P

Im fairly sure this isn't a "blue ringed" octo. The rings only show when angry and it should be brown/yellow in color.

Im not an octo expert by any means, i just think this may be a clear cut case of mistaken identity.

Anyone know of a professional we could call and email pictures to for a proper ID ?

In the meantime, i still think it best to avoid any contact with it. Or if you are going to take it back then go for it.

Don't return it.. some kid might end up buying it not knowing what it is and kill him/herself. That thing is an accident waiting to happen ... donate it to Long Beach Aquarium or something.

nah, just make sure the LFS warns the buyer before purchase.
i've had an octopus wrap around my arm while scuba diving, it was PAINFUL removing the tentacles, each sucker left a circle of blood on my arm. at least he tasted good :D

Yeah, but if a blue ringed octi touches Chuck Norris it will die form the Norris toxin.:)

I would find a more efficient way than tape. But dude! That thing is sick! I say you get a crab and drop that bad boy in there. Tape it and put it up here!

Good luck, and be careful!

oops, sorry. Didnt see the other two pages. My bad.. Yeah, I would donate it somewhere where the people know what they are doing, so some idiot like me doesnt come in and buy that thing... Just my 2 cents

i DOUBT it'll get through the can vents.... slits are too small.... TOO small. and from the underside, it is sealed with screws (to keep lights dry).

i'm going to keep a heavy book on top until i figure out a way to keep it sealed shut.

It can go through the slits by splitting itself and then regenerate once it's outside the tank. Octopi are so strong they can even lift the entire tank while they're still inside and smash it against the wall. They are also smarter than MOST reefers..

Did you see that in the news, too?
about the octo that bit it's arm off, threw it across the room, stuck it to the tank across the room, and then after about a week, regenerated enough to crawl inside the new tank?

that was pretty recent, so let me try and find that link...

Actually that is a "mimic blue ring octo" in the picture....it takes on the characteristics of the blue ring so that predators will avoid it.;)
