Had a lionfish in a 190g tank. He was about 10-11 inches long. Had been with us at the museum for about 18 months. A couple months ago he got this weird red growth on his lip. At the time the LRS guys who contract and care for our tank said he had probably just rubbed it against the glass or rocks too much and irritated it. It went away after a month or so.
Assume that the nitrates and phosphates are both too high, our other tanks range from .5-1 for phosphate and 50-100 for nitrates, but am unable to test this tank right now. Yes I realize this is high, believe it or not we've drastically lowered what they were just a few months ago when I took over the tanks.
For food he has been fed krill, prawn, silversides and cocktail shrimp with the occational piece of raw salmon or halibut.
He died suddenly a few days ago. He had been eating right up to that point. Someone popped him into the freezer and I inspected him a few days later and took some pictures.
The only things that looked a little abnormal were his eyes being a little cloudy, and he had 'fuzzy' growths next to his gill slits on his head. Not sure if all lionfish have these or not. Any idea what may have caused his death? I have my own suspicions but do not want to say anything until I see what your unbiased opinion may be.
Thanks a lot,
Tad
