We know that a few of you know what is going on, and rumors are starting to spread. So we wanted to get out ahead of this.
Chris and I are building a new system.
Originally, we just wanted a glass tank and a second tank. So approximately six months ago we got a glass 240. Due to several things happening, we decided not to go in that direction. We actually sold it for pennies. We also tore down our 120 and sold it. The 300, our current tank, has been doing great ever since minus one glitch. Which due to Chris being very observant, some very clever quick thinking, and a HUGE AMOUNT OF PURE LUCK we managed to advert what should have been an absolute catastrophe.
Long story short, the tank is doing great. The corals are beautiful and growing, and I have manged to convince Chris to not frag every colony constantly, so there are some rather large colonies in the DT. We have a lot of fish (over 50 by our last count) because I am a fish hoarder according to Chris, and I like to make them fat and happy. I can't seem to stop wanting to give fish a good home, and Chris can't seem to tell me no. Unfortunately, we have always had some amount of ich, so in the hopes of dramatically or completely eliminating Cryptocaryon irritans we have decided to keep all of our fish in a hypo-salinity state for a few months (at least until the end of August at the latest) to kill off the ich on the fish and let the ich die off in the current tank. We have so many tangs that the ich outbreaks are getting worse and more frequent even though we run the UV sterilizer 24/7. But, there is not standard sized tank big enough for us to QT all of our current fish in for 2 months to break the cycle.
SO....
We started thinking. Why just quarantine our fish? Instead lets use this as an excuse to get a new tank! Thanks to two very generous, humble, and great reefers that we often look up to
, we are setting up a 360 gallon tank (8ft long x 3 ft wide x 24 tall) to take the place of our current 300 (8ft long x 24 wide x 30 tall). Unfortunately we are both are relatively tall and the tank would be a little too low on the current metal stand for our liking and we wouldn't be able to see into the new tank (even though reaching into the tank would be really easy). That means we need a new stand. And since the current sump for the 300 cannot be removed from the stand easily, we need a new sump as well.
So it is time for a new build. We are not sure about the dimensions of the stand or the sump yet, but Chris informs me that the sump will be approximately 500 gallons. :eek1:
The build will take place over the next few months, and when the ich is gone from the rocks and sand of the 300, we will empty the tank and move it out and immediately move the new stand into its place. Then we can move the 360 DT right onto the new stand and it will all (hopefully) fall into place. (Also watch for a 300 gallon tank/600 gallon system up for sale this summer, LOL)
We may actually be insane, I am not sure. I don't think that we will ever be happy with a build until it is built into the wall of a house, so I can almost guarantee that this will not be our last build thread.
As I have said before: be thankful for significant others who are not as interested in the hobby as you are. They help keep this disease under control and rein you in. I think we have just lost all semblance of self control in this hobby, and that is just the way that we want it. :wildone:
