So We Might Be Insane: Another Build Thread

We know that a few of you know what is going on, and rumors are starting to spread. So we wanted to get out ahead of this.

Chris and I are building a new system.

Originally, we just wanted a glass tank and a second tank. So approximately six months ago we got a glass 240. Due to several things happening, we decided not to go in that direction. We actually sold it for pennies. We also tore down our 120 and sold it. The 300, our current tank, has been doing great ever since minus one glitch. Which due to Chris being very observant, some very clever quick thinking, and a HUGE AMOUNT OF PURE LUCK we managed to advert what should have been an absolute catastrophe.

Long story short, the tank is doing great. The corals are beautiful and growing, and I have manged to convince Chris to not frag every colony constantly, so there are some rather large colonies in the DT. We have a lot of fish (over 50 by our last count) because I am a fish hoarder according to Chris, and I like to make them fat and happy. I can't seem to stop wanting to give fish a good home, and Chris can't seem to tell me no. Unfortunately, we have always had some amount of ich, so in the hopes of dramatically or completely eliminating Cryptocaryon irritans we have decided to keep all of our fish in a hypo-salinity state for a few months (at least until the end of August at the latest) to kill off the ich on the fish and let the ich die off in the current tank. We have so many tangs that the ich outbreaks are getting worse and more frequent even though we run the UV sterilizer 24/7. But, there is not standard sized tank big enough for us to QT all of our current fish in for 2 months to break the cycle.

SO....

We started thinking. Why just quarantine our fish? Instead lets use this as an excuse to get a new tank! Thanks to two very generous, humble, and great reefers that we often look up to :D, we are setting up a 360 gallon tank (8ft long x 3 ft wide x 24 tall) to take the place of our current 300 (8ft long x 24 wide x 30 tall). Unfortunately we are both are relatively tall and the tank would be a little too low on the current metal stand for our liking and we wouldn't be able to see into the new tank (even though reaching into the tank would be really easy). That means we need a new stand. And since the current sump for the 300 cannot be removed from the stand easily, we need a new sump as well.

So it is time for a new build. We are not sure about the dimensions of the stand or the sump yet, but Chris informs me that the sump will be approximately 500 gallons. :eek1:

The build will take place over the next few months, and when the ich is gone from the rocks and sand of the 300, we will empty the tank and move it out and immediately move the new stand into its place. Then we can move the 360 DT right onto the new stand and it will all (hopefully) fall into place. (Also watch for a 300 gallon tank/600 gallon system up for sale this summer, LOL)

We may actually be insane, I am not sure. I don't think that we will ever be happy with a build until it is built into the wall of a house, so I can almost guarantee that this will not be our last build thread.

As I have said before: be thankful for significant others who are not as interested in the hobby as you are. They help keep this disease under control and rein you in. I think we have just lost all semblance of self control in this hobby, and that is just the way that we want it. :wildone:

I dont think the UC would be happy with me tearing out their cabinets. HAHA

I am already giving up my couch to my grad parents for the next few months. :angryfire:

Because that would take up an entire half of the apartment. Trust me, we have debated getting a longer tank.

:crazy1: Thats an awesome tank I want it... :headwally:

Unfortunately, Hannah would no longer have a place to study if we got a tank that big. We looked at a couple ten footers in the past. Unfortunately 8 feet is the biggest we can really put in the Apartment there is actually only one wall that is even longer than 8 feet. < How sad is that. Maybe I should just buy a house.

Wait, you will be setting up a 360 gal in an apartment? Wow!

We already have the 300 set up in the apartment, so not that big of a change. But is does take up a significant portion of the longest wall in the apartment. We can't go any bigger because then we would have to get rid of what little furniture we do have.

If you buy a house, maybe u can put a tank into the wall or make a wall tank lol

That is our plan for a house. One wall is thick acrylic or starphire, and the other 3 walls are a fiberglass material that is supported by the structure of that house.

you think?? LOL good luck with the build. Looking forward to see the progression.
I did say we like it that way.... so that is a good thing, right?

So, the 360 has been in the apartment for a few days now. There really is no room for anything else in the apartment.

For those of you who have not ever seen the apartment or don't understand how tiny it is, here is a picture of what I see walking through the front door:
<a href="http://s1065.photobucket.com/user/hflens/media/360%20Tank%20Build/20150426_131707_zpsqkyx3kzc.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u389/hflens/360%20Tank%20Build/20150426_131707_zpsqkyx3kzc.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150426_131707_zpsqkyx3kzc.jpg"/></a>

Now Chris wants to clean and polish the 360 before we get the fish in it, but like I said, there is practically no room for anything else in the apartment. We had to temporarily rehome the couch because it normally sits along the wall where the 360 is.

As low as the 360 sits, I bet you could fit a couple 40 breeders on shelves above it... ;)

Chris is going to build a new stand for it that will make it quite a bit higher. It will end up with its top level with the top of the 300. But for now we like it low so we can get into the tank easier
