So what happened to ON Formula 2?

Anyone else noticed that the Ocean Nutrition formula two frozen food cannot be found right now? I talked with a local fish store owner buddy of mine that said they moved their production facility from overseas back to the U.S., and haven't started producing it yet.

Not sure if that's a true statement, but in the meantime, i'd be interested to know what other people use as a good quality herbivore fish food. Formula 2 had been my go to for a number of years. I'm still using what little formula 1 i have left, in addition to about 5 other foods, but the time for re-stocking is coming up and I need to make a decision on what food to purchase.

Appreciate everyone's input.

Matt

I know a lot of people swear by Nori, but i'm in the middle of Ohio and don't have much in the way of local seafood markets. To compensate, I feed two little fishies purple and green algae and ON red sheet algae. I also feed formula 1 and angel formula, and then a "plankton" mix that usually includes PE mysis or Hikari mysis, occasionally brine shrimp, and the Sally's Plankton mix.

I always felt like the formula 2 was a good catch all because it had a lot of other ingredient that i wasn't feeding.

I know Rod's reef is popular, but I don't have a store locally that carries it.

Anhy other suggestions?

My fish really like the VHP formula from Ocean Nutrition, and I noticed it was still available when F1 and F2 were not.

If you have herbivores, I'd highly recommend HBH spirulina pellets or flakes. Super high spirulina content, not expensive, and you can buy it online. My fish love the stuff!

Thanks for the advice on the HBH, I don't have much experience with that food.

For some reason, I am just not a fan of flakes or pellets and my fish don't seem to be either. My potters angel and my purple tilefish are the only ones in the tank that will eat NLS pellets.

I will try the HBH flakes if I can find them. I supposed I could just try the Formula 2 flakes too though, I think I can still find those.

The HBH had the highest spirulina content of any dry food I could find.... which is why I went with it. I also feed Formula 2 small pellets. My fish noticeably prefer them over NLS...

Yeah, it seems like everybody love the NLS, but most of my fish just aren't into them. My blue throat trigger eats them as well, but that's not really a surprise. He tries to eat my fingers too if I don't watch it.

For frozens, i do PE mysis and regular mysis. I keep a lot of angels and tangs.

You can buy packs of nori online off amazon.

I do a variety of foods for my tangs. Red, green, brown and purple dried seaweed sheets (various brands). Rod's reef herbivore, NLS pellets, mysis (soaked in Garlic, selcon and vitachem), cobalt aquatics spirulina flakes (my sargassum trigger loves this and it had beta glucan in it).

i have been able to order frozen f1 and f2 for the store i work at for the past several weeks still. either we arent affected or they are givin you a line?

Update on this, I have been told by two of my lfs that the product with gel binder is no longer on an availability list when he orders.

Has anyone else seen more scarcity of this food? I imagine the food from foster and smith is because they bought a bunch of it a while ago and haven't depleted their supply.

funny you mention this I just picked some up & it's definitely different - I thought the gel binder was key but now it just blows apart & kind of makes a mess. my local petco has it

Yeah, one of the guys I used to work for said he ordered the new formula 1 and it pretty much sucks.

I think I'm going to try the rods foods, but there is no where here locally that sells it. Such a shame, formula 2 was my go to all around food.

Try soaking the pellets in the juice of a frozen food you know is popular with your fish.

I actually kind of like the new Formula 1 gel formulation, I haven't tried the new formula 2, I'm finishing up the old stuff I have. I find it easier to break apart before I feed my fish.
