Sohal Tang

I have asked this in the fish forum but have only recieved one reply. I will ask here to get further information.

Have you guys ever kept sohals in a tank around 125 gallons? Can one be kept in a 125 with a fish load consisiting of:

1 foxface
2 true perc clowns
1 yellow tang
3 bartletts anthias
Then the sohal added last and maybe a 2" fish.

Do you think he would just be way too aggresive? Is it possible to keep a sohal if you take the foxface off the fish load? The rest I have, 3 anthias, 2 clowns, 1 yellow tang.

My other option was that I wanted a powder brown, they also look nice, but the sohals have such amazing color.

t5Nitro,

Thank you for your inquiry. We do not suggest adding a Sohal Tang to your aquarium. This species of fish should not be kept with other Tangs and will become aggressive with any new additions.

Ok, thanks.

My bartletts anthias update:

Seems like I recieved 3 males.

There is the one being picked on by 2 other males. Notice the tail.

I am not sure what to do. I have a 46 gallon I could put him in but it houses a yellow tang, I could transfer the 2 other anthias to the 46 gallon and at the same time move the yellow tang into the 125. This would be OK, except I then have to move over 2 clowns later and I wanted a powder brown and foxface. I am not sure how the established yellow tang would like that.

Thanks for any help. I guess I am not too happy because I can't really afford 3 fish all the time at that price and was really hoping to keep these a while and have never tried anthias before and when I recieved them I really did like the color they have. I always buy from the retail store, just decided to go with the online order since I know Foster and Smith has some of the best around for QT and good specimens and that the retail store really never gets these in.

t5Nitro,

Thank you for your post. One of the interesting facts about the Bartlett's Anthias, is that they are hermaphroditic. Therefore, they share both male and female traits. We would advise not to move the affected Anthias to another tank. This would only stress the Anthias more. You could isolate the Anthias with eggcrate until the tail regenerates, provided on water quality and food source. Please contact us at 1-800-334-3699 if you have any further questions about your Anthias.

Have a good evening!

That's what I was thinking. I have eggcrate that I was maybe going to put a piece in the tank so the other 2 can't get to him, maybe leaving a third of the tank to that one.

What about transfering my 2 clowns yet? Are anthias going to bother them? They are bigger than the clowns.

Thanks.

t5Nitro,

Anytime you place new fish into your aquarium there is a possibility that the new fish will be bullied by the established fish in the aquarium. You will want to keep an eye on the new arrivals to ensure the other fish in the aquarium are not harassing them.

We hope this information is helpful. If you have further questions please feel free to contact us.

The sohal will just kill off the other tangs, and any fish that poses a threat. JMO
My sohal is pure EVIL at 4 inches. You could luck out and get a docile one, But they are few and far between for sohals.
Mine is the apitamy of a sohal, and beats up on cleaner wrasses when they try to clean him. I have to call him donald because he has the same disposition as donald duck throwing rampages. LOL
plus a 125 is too small, Mine is growing out in my 180 and will go to 500 gal next year when i set it up.
When he starts outgrowing your tank he will stress out to the point he will kill off all other fish, They are open water fish. Keeping them in a tiny tank is cruel.

The whole top half of the tank is open water, no rocks. Do you think the eggcrate separating the powder brown from yellow will settle the yellow one down? I want to keep him there a week, then the yellow can look at him thru eggcrate. Every reply I have gotten said yellow tangs are just plain aggresive towards other tangs. I will try the eggcrate for a week and then if it still goes on I'll have to trade him in. What other tang should go in with a powder brown if not a small sohal?

I am looking for a magnificent foxface from Live Aquaria, but I doubt they get any in anytime soon anyways.

t5Nitro,

Adding the eggcrate to the aquarium may help to alleviate the aggression temporarily, though if the fish is above the rock work and is unable to claim its own territory away from the other tang, they may fight again as soon as the eggcrate is removed.

You are able to keep another tang in the aquarium with this tang, however we recommend they be introduced at the same time. Tangs are very territorial fish and aggression may become a problem if they are added at different times.

We hope you find this information helpful!
