I hate DF&S...every time when they ship stuffs it always come back in pieces. I order an Aquapod 24 and when i got it, its in pieces.

So i gave up and went with PetSolution instead ...my solana arrive in perfect condition.

Update on the skimmer mod... its working great after i drilled a hole to run the air hose through the side of the skimmer. The mod is very easy to do and requires no real cutting or any difficult mods besides the drilling of a single hole. Makes the stock skimmer nearly silent!

For the air limiter, its also possible to use the whole Tunze cap, but its kinda large.

Skimmer Pump

Skimmer Pump

Has anyone else switched out the pump on the skimmer? If so with what? How has it effected the skimmate?

Also, I am working on setting up my stand. I have a 5G tank in there for top-off and I am not quite sure that I have it setup right. Has anyone done anything cool or have a clean looking setup for there stand? Pics would be great!

nice mod. worth a try.

By the way what do you guys keep on the second chamber?

I'm out of ideas and it's kinda loud from the drip tray
can someone take pics of that area?

Thanks,

Felix-

Anyone ever removed the bio balls and sponge from protein skimmer? These seem to defeat the purpose of live rock. (meaning they will become biological filters).

Im setting up a solana and just made a DIY lamp tree, I thought some people might be interested b/c this should help keep the clean look of the solana.
I used 2 pieces of 3/4 inch aluminum square tube and had them welded at a 90 deg angle. Ill post more pics when its all set up.

Anyone running the tunze skimmer in the first chamber? If so did you remove the magnet on the side or how did you do it? Pics would be great if you have some handy.

The magent pops off if you cut slits around the plastic piece that holds it in. Cut as many as you can, use a screw driver to pop it off carefully.

There are a lot of Solana owners running that skimmer

cfmx: see the mod i posted on top? That works great for me :) Much easier than modding both the tunze cup and skimmer. And it makes it look just like stock, just much, much quieter.

I'm with you on this one. I think I would rather pay for the WHOLE skimmer and just take the magnet off and buy your collection cup and It's good to go!

is that a floor heater behind your tank? if so, you might want to reconsider where you are placing the tank. im sure in PA, you'll be running the house heater sooner or later.

Suggestion for stock Solana skimmer. I find the stock skimmer works fine. I would suggest that you remove the bio balls and sponge filter. I set mine up originally with these installed but after 1 month I removed them. When I took them out there was a ton of detritus attached to the balls and the sponge was loaded as well. This is not a good thing. The detritus encourages phosphates and nitrates. Also as the balls and sponge plug up it effects the skimmers operation.(causes the water level to rise due to the restriction of out flow). Also to quiet down the skimmer put an airstone in the air intake hose.

July thank you for your concern but that is just a holding area for my new tank while I prepare to take down my old 30 gal oceanic and transfer everything into the new solana.

Slightly off topic... I think this has been covered but I dont remember offhand, do you guys think the 150w MH ORB is sufficient lighting or should you just splurge and get the 250w sunpod?

Thanks felix, I should change my name to now "Frankenstein B" Just got my motor started, and breaking it in! WOHOO! ;)

Thanks for the reply GT3000XX. What are you keeping in it? FOWLR? Or are you attempting corals?
