I had long hair algae for three months. The first month I tried to wait it out. The second month I got tire of waiting for it to clear. So I declared war on the algae and WON!!!!
Here is what I did.
I have always used R/O D/I water. My phosphates have always tested 0. However I started feeding with Rod's fish food. Rod's food is Great, but just like anything else only in moderation. I started feeding the fish Rod's every day and to much of it. Rod's is extremely high in nutrition. Before I knew it my tank was covered.
I cut back on food and waited a month. Still I had no luck.
I tested my phosphates and they always tested 0. However they had to be there because algae was everywhere. Here is what I did.
1. CUT BACK ON FEEDING!!!!! I cut my feeding in half and started feeding Rod's every other day. On the off days I would feed mysis shrimp.
2. I added a phosphate reactor and used Phoseband in side of it. I did this for a month and made sure that my phosphates were gone.
3. At the end of the the month after I start the reactor I took a tooth brush to and scrubbed off all of the long hair. I caught all of the algae in a screen as my water pass though my sump. Catch the algae or else it will die and put more phosphates in the water. Then it would grow back.
4. I monitored my tank and in one month the algae was gone. In total it took three months. Good things come to those who wait.
I hope this will help someone.:bum:
