Some help choosing between these 3 canon DSLR cameras

I am going to get a new camera for Xmas, and I have sort of narrowed it down to these 3 canon models... I would love to get some opinions on this, in case there are similarly priced cameras that may be better... The 3 I have chosen are listed below, in no particular order, since I am sure that all of them will suit me fine

Canon xsi 450d
Canon xti 400d
Canon EOS 1000d

Now, there are several options that I have on these... I can buy each of them in a kit that comes with a 28-300mm lens, and a bunch of other stuff

So my largest question is whether I should get one of these packages, or should I just get a body, and then a seperate lens... I am buying this mainly for photograghing my reef from now on, but I will use it for all kinds of other things too

I need a recommendation on a lens, if the one mentioned above will not work with my reef photography, since that will be the immediate use... If there are other cameras that I should consider as competitors of these, I would also like to know those and their advantages over these

I started out looking at the Ogles mesoscope, but it seems that they have not gotten any sort of camera attachment like they were supposed to, so I have disregarded it for now... I still really like the Ogles since it really allows me to study my reef, so if there is any info regarding it that I do not know about that would be cool

I can tell you that I would really love to have the Ogles instead, but I don't think it will allow me to use it like I had hoped

Any help that you experts can offer, would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
NathanS

I don't know anything specific about Canon cameras, but a lot of people love them. The Rebel is for sale all the time.

Since you've picked three models already, did you check out to see which of the three scored the best on dpreview.com?

I'm sure others will chime in in this thread since they love to talk about their Canon cameras. And everyone is going to tell you to get a macro lens for your tank, since this is Reef Central. Probably 90mm or 105mm with a low f-stop.

I got to play with an Ogles mesoscope twice now, but as you pointed out it is for your eyeball only. Considering what it costs, it would be far more useful to us if it had the camera attachment.

Instead, some are using USB-driven microscopes for some images which is pretty neat.

No I did not... I did end up choosing them based on some reading from that site, but mainly it came down to price

That would be what I was looking for, but if someone could tell me what the difference is between one of those, and the 28-300mm that would help... Could that 28-300 lens not take decent macros?

That sounds pretty cool, would love to get some more info on what that is

Those are all in the same 'series' of cameras. I'd avoid the 1000D but either of the other would be fine. If money is an issue get the 400D, if not get the 450D.

Avoid "bundles" and make sure that you check out the reseller with http://resellerratings.com before you buy.

Can you tell my why I should avoid the 1000? From what I read on Dpreview's site, the 1000 was a step up from the 400, and a step down from the 450, so in between the 2

I'd need to know more about that lens, like which brand.

Here is the link to the bundle

There's nothing wrong with questions. We just try to help after you've read all the stickies. :D

Oh, I understand! I was not trying to be rude... It seems that I have read that sticky a few times before, but I did not remember that disclaimer @ the bottom... I also had been through the SLR guide from this site... That is originally how I came up with those Canon cameras

Ok, so I am still looking around, but now I have a window with that resellerrating site open at all times

I found a site that has a lot of lenses for sale, and they have a good rating on that site, so I am wondering if the following lens would be a good choice for the Canon XSI

Here is the lens

I have pretty much decided to get the Canon XSI (450)... I just wanted to list these other DSLRs that are in the same price range, just to make sure that I am not missing out on a good deal... It seems like there are several more on that site, that are in the $500-$600 range... I know that hands on use is really the only way to know, so I am just hoping that some of you have played around with these

First off, Here is the page that I am selecting the following from... This is the price range that is available to me, so I pretty much have to pick from them, unless there is something clearly better and only a few extra bucks.

This is in no order, but just chosen from the page listed above

Thanks,
NathanS
