Some Hitchhikers from the swap

Mel~ Thanks for the advice... Already done... ;) Besides which, you're the one that scared me the most... lol :D I told Ashley about your blisters...

OH man...it looks so freaking horrifying right now.

Brent has no sympathy for me any more. In fact it pretty much makes him really mad at me when I get them. I told him about it and he was like "I don't care...I hope your arm falls off." Nice. hah hah.

I don't even want to show it to him because it's just going to make him madder. hah hah. Actually it's gotten to the point that I don't want to show anyone anymore. I bought a bunch of those giant bandaids and have to use three of them to cover up the two hydroid spots and my burn off the MH bulb. It looks great.

lol Battle wounds... ;) You can tell him those few marks earned you a RO/DI and maybe part of a sink or drain... lol That might shut him up??? Nah, I yanked them off the frag they came in on before they even went in the holding tank... I just hope they don't grow back and spread...

So it looks worse now eh??? Is it just because your skin is so sensitive???

Anyone else blister up from hydroid stings??? I don't know if I do, and don't want to know... :(

I don't think it's just because my skin is really sensitive...but I do think that makes it worse. Some people are a bit more resistant to it than others.

Then there are the other morons who know they are very sensitive to the stings and still refuse to saran wrap their arm before putting it into the tank. So stupid...that's why Brent isn't super sympathetic.

Saran wrap your arm? That's a new one on me. I am using Aquarium gloves lately. I don't like its stiffness, but it sure beats the stings. Do any of you use the long disposable veterinarian's gloves?

No, I'm sure that I could get some, but I've definately seen Vets use them... And where they're sticking their arms, I'd use them too... lol :D Sorry Chris... ;)

I've popped the stalks with my finger nails/nubs without knowing they could possibly "hurt" me. I've also grabbed LR where either they or tiny tube worms were and that did make my fingers puff up. I'm probably on the other end of the spectrum from Mel; I used to get stung by urchins amoung a lot of other things all the time while lobstering when I was a kid.

The long gloves work great for sticking your arm up a cows anus but they really stink at keeping water out:D
They would protect you against stings but they aren't much better than the arm length heavier aquarium gloves for mobility. I allways seem to knock stuff over using either one. The Vet gloves leak every time if you have you arm in for more than a minute or so IME in an aquarium.
I get contact dermatitis form having my hands in the tanks for any length of time now and I still don't use either kind of glove even though I have both handy:rolleyes:
They are just not practicle when performing finer tasks IMO.
Chris

I used those gloves because Brent got really mad at me another time...so to try to make him feel better I went to the tractor supply and got them. That is an embarrassing story, let me tell you! But what I quickly determined was that I could not use them in my tank without those tiny hard tubed worms catching them every two seconds and me almost toppling my rock about 10 times per use.

So NO...I do not use them. What I have found to be light years more effective for me (wouldn't be good for Chris though) is to wear regular latex gloves, then wrap saran wrap around my arm and rubberband it at the wrist and the elbow. That works great...which is why my husband is so mad at me that he wants my arm to fall off. hah hah. Yep...I'm stupid.

Hmm, I suspect that the vet's ones are not like surgical gloves, then.

Tomoko

No they are built more like "lunch lady" gloves that come up to your armpit.

The older style latex gloves I used to get from UTCVM came up to my elbows, but never past... I reckon those would have been nice... Course I don't use anything... So.........

Sloppy Joes... Slop sloppy joes...

Thanks, everyone. I guess I will stick to my aquarium gloves. Although it's stiff and awkward to use, it's better than an unruly tong. They came in handy when I needed to retrieve something out of my tank in a hurry.

Tomoko

Navy beans, Navy beans, navy beans... LMAO :D I was wondering if anyone would get that...

whats all this about gloves.... Why don't you guys just use your bare hands?

I do use bare hands in my tank but not in a cow's anus...unless I have to:p

However I think most would agree some sort of protection is best...especially for people like Mel and I that seem to come down with epithelial ailments on a regular basis;)

I have those starfish all over my tank and they do not cause anything any harm. I have acros, m. caps, candy canes, zoanthids, and a kenya tree in my tank. I have seen them crawling on all and damaging none. They seem to be just after the algae. As some of the articles say above, though, there are varieties that do cause harm. I think those varieties they have more of the the purple mottling on them (from what I've seen of the bad pics -- my experience is limitted).

The blow-torch method is only temporary in dealing with hydriods. They always come back in a couple of months unless I put some zoanthids over the patches I clear. Then again, I have a bad case ("Those are just brown tube worms. Honest"). They are the dominant lifeform in my tank due to inheriting "used" live rock that was severely infected and then feeding them with high nutrients and live phytoplankton for a couple of years.

If I could get starfish that eat hydriods in addition to SPS, I'd happily dump them in my tank, though.
