Some Hitchhikers from the swap

How about 12:30?

Yeah, so this time...we are hopefully going to mod that pump.

Maybe we can coax Dave A. into coming to the meeting and overseeing us out? If not...we'll still do it! Doesn't seem THAT hard. What's funny is that just about an hour ago Brent says "we should mod that pump like that thread you sent me." I started laughing and was like..."oh...yeah...we're going to. Feb 17th at the reef club meeting, which is here at our house." hah hah.

So yeah....I have not decided on the food theme yet. It's like freaking three weeks away! Hold on...dang...I will think of a theme!

OH and yes...laughter is always a big part of our meetings. If we can't make fun of each other and talk smack...well it would be pretty boring.

Anytime after noon is fine by me Mel... lol ;)

Oh and mighty nice of you to let Brent know... Especially since its not even the day before yet... :D

Oh I told him the other day kinda...last night I just reminded him about what day it was exactly.

But I have done that..."btw the reef club meeting is at our house tomorrow...didn't I tell you?"

Yeah!!!!! Chris will be there... :D No tests or anything???

I just checked my schedule, and I have a few horses to do that morning... I should be able to get there by 1 or 1:30 at the latest though... :)

well honestly...I thought of starting at 1, but everyone is always late anyways...so I said 12:30. Plus that's moore like lunch.

Well, I like to make a grand entrance and all... ;) And you're the queen of lateness... lol :D Guess thats one good thing about it being at your house... Can't be late... But once I get there, the party can begin!!!

BTW this has been the biggest thread hijack ever... lol :uzi:

No kidding.

I wonder if I will still have my battle wounds then. I probably will because it's looking like it's going to scar. My arm looks like ground beef in those two spots plus that burn is still horrendous looking.

There...now we are back to talking about bad stuff in the fishtank!

Ok, speaking of pests... Red Slime Algae... What the heck did you do to combat this stuff??? I'm starting to get a bit in my 120 and all my params check out... Grrr... Made me break out my test kit... Oh BTW remind me to bring my refractometer to your house... I need to recalibrate it... I messed it up one day playing with it... lol I think its pretty close, but I want it to be spot on...

The big test that week will be over with:D
I might be a little late too....I'll have to wake up Amy(night shift ya know) before I can come...or I'll get a sitter...but whatever I do I'll be there:p

Pests in aquariums suck!

Chris

hah hah...way to stay on topic Chris.

Randy there's chemical stuff you can use. Red slime is cyanobacteria.

I have never used anything like that and I probably won't ever, but there are products out there for cyanobacteria.

I usually get it when I need to change my bulbs.

Oh I guess I can comment on cyano.

IME there are small amounts in most healthy aquariums(red or brown), usually in lower flow areas. I just blow any that occours in my tank off with a powerhead when I blow the rest of the rocks off every few weeks and don't worry too much about it unless it starts to really spread.

FWIW, Chris

That's how it is in my tank...a bit here and there along the bottom.

When my lights start to go bad I can predict that I will get this increase of it along the bottom. Stuff starts to get coated by it really badly.

I read somewhere on here it can happen when you have new bulbs burning in too... Most of it is gone this morning... So, maybe they were just breaking in??? I dunno... I'll blow off whatevers left when I get home today... :D

Man, talk about a hijack! :) Since we are on the subject of.... Oh one subject... I reach in my QT with nothing but plastic stuff to hide in yesterday and still managed to get freakin blasted by a bristle worm! I moved a fish from the 10 to a 20 tank and was gonna swish around and squeeze the sponge filter real good first and wouldn't you know a monster bristle worm had hitched a ride from my sump on it and was hiding out on the bottom. I had a finger full of hairy bristles and a very swollen sore finger today. Grrrrrr.

I've had a pretty significant cyano issue going on in my tank for several months. Nasty stuff - it was growing in sheets over my gravel and LR. I tried everything to get rid of it - changed the bulbs, frequent water changes, phosphate reactor, etc., etc. I could blast it away or even suck it out with a turkey baster and it would always come back. The strange thing is that my water params were all right on the mark, including zero phosphate with a Merck test kit - everyone always says to check PO4 first if you are getting cyano. I get decent growth on most of my coral, too. The only bad things about cyano seem to be it looks bad and it can smother smaller-sized frags.

When I was out in Portland last month, the guys at Upscales recommended I try this product called Chemi-Clean. I'm very leery of "reef safe" chemicals like that (whatever it is - they don't tell you), but the guys at Upscales use it, and their tanks are spectacular, so I decided to trust their advice. I put it in last week, and within the 48 hour treatment period, nearly all my cyano withered away. The instructions say a second treatment might be necessary. A few days after the first treatment, my gravel started getting slightly brown, and there was something coming back on my LR. I don't know if it was the cyano coming back or some other algae, but I decided to do the second round of treatment just in case. The second round ended just two days ago.

I'll just have to see how things look in a week or two. The good news is that none of my LPS, SPS, or the few softies I have seemed to notice the Chemi-Clean at all. They're all still very happy - perhaps even more PE than before. I read on RC that cyano may exude a mild toxin, so maybe nuking it made the corals happier.

If the cyano doesn't come back for a few months, then I'll be fine with just re-dosing with Chemi-Clean if I need to. If it's sooner than that, I've read some people on RC have had good success with Erithromycin (sp?). But I'm hoping I won't have try that.

Randy - feel free to check in with me in a couple weeks if you're still having cyano issues. I should know by then whether the Chemi-Clean provided a long-lasting solution. Of course, every tank is different. If there's some kind of ongoing condition that's givnig you the cyano, it will come back after any treatment.

Angela that sucks!!

Jeff...I was going to mention your problems but I didn't want to *out* your tank without talking to you first, ya know? I figured you'd comment at some point!

I won't be able to make it (2nd time I'm goin' miss Mel's new tank). Have to pick up a car in Dallas that w/e. But I'll host a meeting soon. I was going to do my traditional March meeting, but I think someone has already requested that one.
