I have a 12" toadstool, it was one of my first corals as it started from a wee little 2 inch frag. I started to dose a carbon sorce and now my toad stool is not happy at all! It has not shown any polp extention in 3 days and at night it has a very shinny surface and is excreating a stringly substance. I has one more week of heavy dosing of carbon sorce and then i can back off of the dosing. I want to make sure that he is not releasing cemicals that are going to atack my SPS. please help.

Also i have just replaced one of my reeflux 400w 12k bulbs with a reeflux 20k bulb. I will also be posting this in the "reef discusion" forum to try to get some others attention.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Check the base for comb jelly fish. The stringy substance could be the feeding tentacles. You will need to search around the rim for the jellyfish, which are the same color as the leather.

This is a great photo of what they look like:

This is an OK photo of the feeding tentacles. They're usually not as dense as shown here. Usually more sparse and look like hair:

If this is what you are seeing, you just need to scrape the jellies off with your finger nail and rinse them off outside the tank. The leather should open back up in a day or so...

Leathers are also usually the first to react to low pH, so check that. It's also possible that they are just shedding, which they can do pretty frequently and there is no problem at all...
