Hi all,

I posted a few pics a while ago here of my red sea max inhabitants, check 'em out if you'd like! :D

Here are some from my LFS's 300g (nikon d40x, kit lens 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, EXIF data on the flickr pages):

Great shots. Thinking about this camera. The only drawback I see is that the body does not have an AF motor, so lenses are limited. What are your thoughts on the camera?

wow...those are nice...what local fish store is that ???
Thanks! They were taken at Coral Sea Tropical Fish in Riverside. Great store, the people are knowledgeable.

The D40x is the best cameras purchase i've made in a long time. After getting more acquainted here are a couple of things i wish it had: more autofocus points, it has 3. a motor (like you said). Other than that i am very pleased. It is very compact compared to other bodies. When it comes down to it, it's all about the lens choice. I'm looking at a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 (has a motor) next (can't afford the equiv. Nikon!). True, this kit lens has it's limitations, but you can stretch it. Nikon has more and more lenses with motors built in and I see myself using only a couple in the future so it doesn't bother me.

Forgot to mention, i wish the D40x had an auto-bracket exposure feature, which it doesn't. So taking HDR shots is a little bit of a pain since i have to manually dial the exposure up and down.

Wow...nice shots. Is that the standard 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera? Never thought that stock lens could take such nice pics.

thanks! yes, it is the stock 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 lens that comes with the camera. i think i have stretched it to its limits. i am upgrading soon though to a f/2.8 zoom.

I got the Canon XTI but I did not get it for aquaria pics so I bought the 28-135mm lens which is useless for Aquaria shots. I'm thinking of picking up a standard 18-55 lens now so I can take more shots like yours. Really amazed how those turned out. Great job...

Just on a side note...what do you typically set your ISO to?

Most of these are at 800. The lower the better, ideally 100-200 would be awesome, but that's not going to happen.

What setting did you use to take those pics? Very nice!!

Thank you! For these i just brought the camera in and did them all handheld shooting in Manual mode. A couple might have been Aperture-priority. You can view the EXIF data on the flickr page if you click the image and on the lower right it says "Taken with a Nikon D40x" and then "More Properties". Most seem to be around 1/80 and f/4-5.8, ISO 800.
