Some new pics

Thank you db_triggerfish!

Well my fantasy football team failed me, looks like I'll be waiting awhile for that Ca reactor that I was going to be buying with the winnings. :thumbdown

I'm done with being mad about the Ca reactor. Sure it would have been nice, but . . .

On to better things. I was trying to get a good pic of an acro that looks very similiar to a bonsai. The purple is very difficult to capture although in real life it's unbelivable. The polyps on this one are florescent green and really stand out. I got the frag from a local reefer.

I was trying to get a shot of the bonsai . .esque acro from the side and the picture turned out pretty cool. Thought I'd share it.

oH man thats looking sweet. It nice to have good friends with purple bonsai acros!!

Great job....tell me all your secrets..haha

no secrets here, I just try to keep my Ca and Alk steady with Randy's two part and do a 20 gallon water change every other week.

Speaking about Randy's two part. . . . I can't believe my fantasy team let me down! I should be ordering a Ca reactor today :(
Allright, that's enough about the Ca reactor, I'm not going to talk about that again!

how often do you blow your rocks out?

I am having major problems with my tank at the moment and I am blowing tons of stuff out of my rocks it seems. Phosphates must be through the roof even though they register 0 on my salifert kit. I might as well not have a phosphate kit.

I try to give the rocks a good basting at least once a week. I usually do it right before lights out so I don't have to see all the stuff floating around.
For the last couple of months I've been using a MJ 900 powerhead to go over all the rocks, caves, and holes right before I do a water change. I try to get as much junk into the water column and then siphon it out. It's like a snow storm every time I do it.

Are you having algae problems CeeGee?

thanks for the reply.

Yeah I have blonde hair algae on my tunzes and on my return. The rockwork is relatively algae free at least. I am having a STN problem that I assume must be from phosphates.

I had a chips acro that was doing great with excellent polyp extension (the most I have ever seen on a chips) and all of the sudden it retracted polyps and two days later it is all but gone. No changes in the tank water chemistry. All I can think of is that phosphates finally are unbearable to many of my SPS.

Montipora are unaffected as are birdsnest and my largest acro is still holding it together. My green slimer, chips acro, and ORA blue tort are all in bad shape.

It really sucks as the chips was gorgeous and the tort was finally getting some color after a year in my care. Things seemed to be doing great and BAM! Things are worse than ever.

I wash all food and I am employing a skimmer that is much larger than needed (supposedly) and I am still having this issue of high phosphate that doesn't register on the salifert kit.

Funny thing is the hair algae grows but my chaeto doesn't. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

That really bad news about the corals, especially the chips, very nice piece.

I'm surprised the birds nest is hanging in, while your other acros are going down hill. Usually the birds nest is a good indicator of things going wrong, if it's doing bad, you know you have a problem. I'm also surprised your slimer is doing bad, I've found that to be a very hardy coral, almost indestructable.

This really doesn't sound like a phosphate problem. Have you changed anything recently? Added a Ca reactor, over dosed Alk, added a phosphate reactor, etc? Have you checked for red bugs, acro eating flat worms?

Have you thought about using a phosban reactor?

I have been dosing 2 part since the beginning. The only thing that has been added in quite some time is a couple of frags from live aquaria (months ago) and a set of tunze streams.

I have had what seems to be reverse results from everyone else. Things that are supposed to be difficult are doing well for me while the easy stuff just withers away in my care. I can't figure out for the life of me what I am doing wrong. I can't seem to get these phosphates that are causing this algae under control either.

It is very frustrating. Add to that I have been very very busy this holiday season and unable to care for the tank like I would like.

You keep blaming it on phosphates but you test and get no readings. I know phosphate tests are terrible, but people with large phosphate problems always get some type of reading.

I still think it's something else, don't know what but I don't think it's phosphates. I would plan on doing two big water changes in a row, 50% and leaving a couple of days inbetween both. Make sure your new water matches your tank specs, Alk, Ca and Mag, take a powerhead to the rocks right before syphoning and get as much of the junk in the water column and just suck out 1/2 and replace. Do it again two days later. Starve the algae with clean water!

Also, look for RB's and AEFL's and good luck getting things back in order!

would RB or AEFW eat so much of a coral and then leave it alone?

My corals that are STNing on me have kind of "evened out" or so it seems. My blue tort for example is halfway gone and has been that way for about a week it seems to have "stabilized" for lack of a better description. The funny thing is that the flesh that is left has better coloration than ever although it looks nothing like the corals in your tank. I have seen no RB's and I have a pretty keen eye. I am not so sure about the AEFW though. Not sure what to look for.

I blame phosphates as the algae just keeps coming and coming. I have to clean my glass every day as new algae is growing on it that quickly. I will try and grab a pic when I get home tonight. It is awful.

Thank you racerw!

I have no idea what is going on with your tank CeeGee! There are pics of all types of acro predators on the top of this forum, I'd check them out and see if you notice something similiar.
Good luck to you!

regardless of whether I have RB's or AEFW's I need to get this algae under control.

I appreciate your input newschool and I love your tank. I have been looking at the page 1 pics all day. It is really nice and you should be proud.

One thing, I believe I read that you are using a G3 (ASM I assume) and I am running one as well. Do you find that you have to constantly adjust it? I have the valve gate and recirc mods and this skimmer overflows on me constantly. I set it to where it is working great and come back an hour later and it is overflowing.

No worries at all CeeGee and I appreciate the compliments.

I use two ER skimmers, a ES5-2 and a CS5-2. They are the smallest ER skimmers, 20" tall, 5" wide with Sedra 3500 pumps driving them. It's all I can fit under my short arse stand!

These are set and forget skimmers, I never have to adjust at all and it's been like that since I set them up.

This is what I pull about every 3 - 4 days. I do have a high bio load though.

CeeGee...... I have a ASM G3 and never have to mess with the riser and it never overflows. I dont have the gate valve but I did the recirc mod and mounted the pump vertically. I also just finished the meshwheel mod and WOW...does it make a difference. I don't have a flow meter myself but someone with a sedra 5000 tested it and saw an improvement of 9lpm stock up to 15lpm of air with the meshwheel. I had to drop the water level 1.5-2" in the chamber.
