Some problems possibly

Moved On
I just got a Gigas clam today. It didn't react very well when I touched it or when I moved my hand over it blocking the light. In fact, it hardly reacted. My crocea clam also looks partly shriveled at the end of it and my maxima is still a baby that looks good.

Tell me whats wrong with them and what could be the causes. Thanks.

can you post your water parameters and a list of your livestock?

i see some mucus coming off the mantel of the crocea. does the flame angel bother them?

My flame angel doesn't bother my clams.

1 Purple Tang
1 flame Angel
2 Clarki Clownfish

I will test my water in a second.

look for snails under the mantel too. they are a small pyramid snail, it is best to look after lights out, but take a look now if you can.

here's a thread , with some good info and a pic

the Gigas looks fine

the Crocea has pinched mantle. give the Crocea a 30 min FWD.

take some RO/DI and match the temp to the tank water. place the clam in the RO and swish it around, then get a turkey baster and gently blow RO water all along the edge of the mantle and byssal opening.

do a large water change and add at least 4L fresh carbon.

keep a close eye on the clam, it may return in a week. if so repeat.

post back and let us know how it go's

looking back at the pics the small Maxima has PM also. these smaller clams usually dont make it through a FWD but will die from PM also.

can you get a good clear pic of the Maxima

Pinched Mantle is a term thats used for a Protozoan infestation

Thanks a lot mbbuna for helping me out and everyone else too. :) I tested my water last night and everything seems to be normal but my calcium is REALLY high:

Nitrate-0
Nitrite-0
Ammonia-0
Phosphates-0.25
Salinity-1.027
temperature-80 F
Alkalinity-3-4meq/L
Calcium-525 ppm
pH-8.2

The calcium is high and was even higher before. I have been trying to bring it down lately and so far its working. I have no idea how it got this high. I am using Seachem test kits to measure my parameters and a portable refractometer for my salinity. Could the high calcium be the problem thats causing my clams to shrivel? I read in one of the forums (clams direct) that additives could provide iron or iodide which the PM loves. Here are some pictures of my clams.

Mucus coming off Max
Tankshots108.jpg

I noticed that all three of my clams were giving off mucus. Should I fwd all my clams including the new Gigas? If the new Gigas was already releasing mucus and the other two clams are also then could this be an early possible sign of a PM? I know fwd the baby maxima clam is risky but I heard that once the mantle does not come out anymore, the clam is pretty much a goner. So should I fwd the baby maxima for like 5 mins at the most and the Gigas and Crocea 30 mins?

Once I do FWD the clams, I should put carbon in the tank right?

Thanks

has the crocea had the PM for a long time or did it come with new clams? what order did you get them and how far apart? the mucus is a defensive reaction to something they don't like. it stands to reason that if your crocea and maxima both have PM the gigas will have it or get it . he's just been through a move and getting acclimated to the new tank, maybe give him a day or two and keep an eye on the situation.

did you dip the other two?

can you get more accurate with the alk? 3 - 4 is pretty broad but i would guess it is closer to 3 with your calcium so high. how are you controlling your alk and calcium ( 2 part, kalk, reactor ... ) you should get a magnesium test kit also, as these three work together and can hinder each other if one is out of whack. 3 isn't bad but you should try to raise it with three clams and the calcium should fall in line.

i would dip all three. i dont know how the small Maxima will take the dip but i dont think you have any other choice. only dip the Maxima for 15 or 20min.

also put the carbon right away

I dipped all three clams. I only dipped the maxima for 5 minutes because I really don't want to lose it. I will keep an eye on it though to see if the PM comes back. I dipped the Gigas and the Crocea for approx. 30 minutes. Here's some updated pictures.

I am going to go do a water change and put some carbon in my tank right this second. The alkilinity is 3.5 meq/L. Sorry I wasn't clear.

So what do you guys think? I hope the maxima will make it. It doesn't seem to be that badly affected by the dip but knock on wood.

the crocea looks 1000x better. i hope you didn't hurt your efforts by only doing the maxima for 5 min. if he carried any protozoa back with him, lets hope not .
