some sump questions

Thinking of using a plastic tote for a sump, but I have a couple questions.

1.) I saw this guy use pressure baffles, so the baffles are movable and not siliconed in. Basically, he took some weather stripping and cut the baffles almost to width of the sump and then put the stripping on the sides of the baffles so they wedged in, but still remained movable if you wanted them to be. So my question is - what are some DIY baffle materials? Pretty much anything that water can't run through?

2.) Is it safe to put a heater in a plastic tote, or should that go in my overflow, or is that too far away from the return to keep things heated?

thanks!

1) Virtually any plastic.. (Acrylic, PVC, HDPE are just fine)
2) Yes thats ok.. The water is circulated and will reach stability across both containers..

Don't use plastic or acrylic in a glass tank, the expansion can crack the glass. For glass tank you should use glass, acrylic tanks use acrylic.
