can anyone tell me why my overflow box makes so much noise, and why one of the syphen tubes always get air into it, then eventually stops the syphen? i've gotten the overflow to be quiet, but after every time i do a water change or clean the tubes then start them again, the chugging noise returns. it's really late at night, and it's driving me nuts haha!

If you get a bigger return pump this will enable you to lower the overflow box. this causes the water to flow faster through your syphon tubes which wont let the bubbles collect in the tubes. That is why they are stopping.
For the noise, put a 45 degree piece at the end of your plumbing. Only half of the 45 should be under water. Hope this helps.

Hi,

T11T5 is correct, a pump pushing more gallons/hour will keep the air bubbles out of your Utube. Also, clean your Utube when it gets grungy looking. They need to be slick(no algae or coralline) on the walls of the Utube. If you get a big coralline build-up soak it in White Vinegar overnight to remove.

If you are using a hang on overflow box with a u tube you can simply zip tie a 12" piece of saran wrap to your prefilter and let it hang down into your plumbing. My overflow is almost silent and is flowing at 1200 gph. Make sure the saran wrap is cut to about 2" wide.
