oh no.... you need any help?
not sure yet . .

1) pulled everything out of stand (except sump) and dried out stand. Auto-top off reservoir was empty (?)
2) sent BF & son OUT for dinner
3) Marked with dry-erase pen water level in sump
4) set up auto-top off on counter in kitchen & filled
5) ran auto top off & checked fittings - no leaks. Turned off & filled & noted water level
6) started running carpet shampooer (suck only)
7) checked level in sump - holding
8) ran hands over pipes from overflow & return hoses - no dampness
9) ran hands over floor of stand - still dry
10) emptied protein skimmer which for some reason is going crazy
11) checked water level in auto top off reservoir - maybe a little lower

to be continued

Pulled about 2 gallons of water out of the carpet of an estimated 10 that went in.

Water level in sump holding.
Water level in reservoir holding.

Time to take a dinner break!

When your skimmer overflows where does it overflow to?
It's starting to sound like your skimmer went crazy started dumping water on the floor and your ATO sensed the lower water level and began filling the system back up while the skimmer was pumping it back out.

I'd also check on you Salinity if the ATO was empty.

Obviously it's a total shot in the dark, but that's what the clues are adding up to so far, if you ask me.

S.G. of water in the carpet shampooer 1.020 :( Water was less-than-translucent.
S.G of water in tank 1.026 :)

Protein skimmer overflow recirculates back into protein skimmer - unique design, & it works great for me. It is a DIY I made about 10 years ago.

Water level in sump still holding.
Water level in reservoir still holding.
Inside of stand still dry.
Son reports he noticed wet carpet when he got up this morning -> slow leak?

Steve - thanks for the brainstorming. Any other ideas?

Found it! Auto top off connects to DIY Kalk reactor. I just found a crack in the bottom of the kalk reactor.

Very easy to replace!

And carpet is now cleaner as a fringe benefit. :)

Whoaa... that was close. I am glad it was not too serious and nothing died. I recently had a bout with water on the carpet syndrome myself. It was due to the @#$# CPR overflow losing its siphon and the water in the sump was 'just' enough to have a bit spill over the top of the tank. I really, really, despise these things. :(
