SOO is it a Mantis or pistol?

I have been hearing clicking sounds ALOT lately in my tank. So I either have a Mantis or a pistol. Now I havnt had any empty shells from my hermits, or snails anywhere. Except the 2 empty snail shells the hermits took out in the very front of the tank..no where near the clicking. So its in the back of the tank and I have been trying to pinpoint it forever now. it seems to click in a rapid fire way..alot like my old pistol shrimps use to when something got near it. Also it usually lets off a burst of clicks when i turn the lights out as well. Kinda making me thing its a pistol since a mantis usually doesnt just click for no reason at all. I think it might be in this one rock that isnt to big and I could pull out for a quick FW dip to see if it comes out. I really hope its not a mantis.

Insted of fw, use carbonated, (non-flavored), mixed with salt to match the tank. He will come out!!!!

I have had a mantis in the past (hitchhiker) and I also have a pistol shrimp now. I can tell you that I can't tell the difference in the noise they make. try to figure out what section of the tank the noise is coming from and then check it out with a red led flashlight at night.

i have been trying the red flashlight everynight but its coming from the back of the tank and I cant see back there.
Actually I think the rock it MIGHT be in is small enough to toss in the sump..I will throw it down there and see if the clicking sound moves down there. I could careless if it ends up down there.

That is probably your best bet. If it is a mantis and you want to get rid of it let me know. I have been looking for one.

I'd consider myself pretty lucky to get a peacock mantis as a hitchhiker... But that's just me. Good luck finding him!

If I find him and get him out its all yours..

When I had mine, it took me 5 nights sitting up until 3 in the morning with a flashlight. when he came out, I shined the light on him, he ran in a rock and I pulled the rock out. It was a FOWLR so I just barely fed the tank and he started coming out looking more.

what sucks is it coming from the back of the tank....and I really cant see back there :(

Nice setup! Yea, I got lucky since the mantis was in a rock on the right side of my tank. I only had to move one other rock. Be patient, you'll get him.

You can buy them for $50 from some LFS...I know the Seahorse occasionally has very nice sized ones for around that price. You wouldn't feel quite so lucky if he wiped out your fish population in the process of you discovering you had said hitchhiker

Yeah you're probably right... That would more than likely "P" me off.

That was how I found out I had one back then. I had 3 fish gone with no sign of them. I then found one that must have just escaped but had a big gash on its side.

My first saltwater animal was a mantis shrimp female I named Shakira who I kept for 2 years in a 10 gallon tank with LR. Sometimes she's hit the glass so hard I could swear she was going to crack right through it. Led to some pretty funny falling off the top bunk in college moments I'm sure to run and check to see if saltwater was spilling all over my term paper. She was, by far, the coolest animal I've ever kept in a glass cage. The personality and behavior patterns were just simply fascinating. Watching her completely destroy guppies and feeder goldfish was a fringe benefit. I'd love to keep another one in a species only tank at some point in my life.

I was just about to ask if a 10 gallon would be sufficient for one. I'd like to set up a 10 gal refugium to run on my system, and thought a peacock would make an awesome inhabitant.

I had a butt ugly gray/brown one in a ten gal for over 4 years. Didn't have the color of a peacock, but still amazing to watch.
