Well it appears there may be a tropical storm on it way, and this is my first hurricane season with a tank! And of course it my baby lol I wanted to mayb get idead on how to prepare and what to do if we get hit and power goes out. I have a 29 cube at the moment! Just trying to get prepaird, any idead would be awesome,. Thank you guys~

I purchased a generator a few years ago (I also moved here from another state) and the gen sat in my garage for 4 years and never used. I just switched over to battery backups on the tank and around the house. I am planning on getting a small gen but in your case look into battery backups. A ups will run a powerhead for over a day or more.

Generator or battery backup is nice. But you can get buy with battery powered air pumps temporarily.

If you live somewhere that will allow you to run a generator. You can get a small one fairly cheap from Northerns or Harbor Freight.

Allow? I'd like to see someone tell me I can't run a generator during or after a natural disaster ie hurricane or, tropical storm if my house doesn't have power. And yes I live in an HOA

It really depends how long the power is out, I have 3 of battery powered airstones for those unfortunate instances when the power does go out for indefinite amounts of time. I also have a battery backup which will give power to my wave makers but I'll only get about a day out of it and usually if we lose power to a Tropical Storm or Hurricane it takes longer than 1 day to get the power back.

anybody know of a battery powered air pump that doesnt sound like a full size shop compressor? lol they are the best to have arround in emergencies but boy are they LOUD!

Well, that's the problem. Yes you can get generators that don't sound like a spitfire landing in your back yard, but they can get pretty pricey. Honda generators are the so-called "gold standard" of small, low-consumption, low-noise generators. However, they're not cheap....and they're also not the only name in the game. Hyundai makes a similar model. Not quite as fancy and it uses a little more fuel, but OTOH it IS supposed to be quieter. Go google or amazon this item:
Hyundai HY2000si 2200-Watt Portable Inverter Generator

It's close to $700, but it's an option if you need extended power in a quiet neighborhood.

Totally misread this....my previous post was supposedly in answer to your question. Which, obviously, missed the mark by miles.

In regards to quiet battery power air pumps....I dunno, the blue ones I have for my tanks aren't terribly loud. How loud is too loud for you??

the one i have is the AZOO and i can hear it in the kitchen downstairs with my door closed lol it is stupid loud. ive had to turn it on in the middle of the night(like 3am) cause the power went out and it wakes everybody up. not cool! if it sounded like a regular a/c pump no problemo

as far as a generator i got a small yamaha one, super silent, would highly recommend it. ill look up the model if anyone is interested. like novahobbies said good quality, quiet generators cost a pretty penny so be prepared lol

Yes, some condos and apartments you may not be able to run a generator for safety reasons.

I have a marine deep cycle battery and a power inverter. I've never tested it yet but I plan on plugging in one of my tunzes into it for flow and hopefully it will last a few days if needed. Where I live the power rarely goes out for a long period of time, I think because the cable and power lines are under ground. If I want I can always add another battery as well to run a fridge or tv but I don't really have room for another battery in my condo.

Hi, in regards to the battery backups, can you suggest makes/model or the one you bought? Thanks for sharing.

I wanted a vortech backup but @ almost $200/ea I went this route.. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2276372

works great and cost me under $40. I also have a UPS I bought from tigerdirect a while back. I had it hooked up to a koralia 1050 but i'm going to put it on again with a tunze 6025. Both are low watt pumps that should run for hours on a ups.
