Sort of a crazy California idea

I moved to Cali (south of SF) a few years ago from Philly. I have a 600 gallon setup and am thinking about getting back into the hobby. I have an outside deck area that is about ten feet square (it held a large hot tub before). I am thinking about putting a tank (to be viewed through my sliding glass door) and the necessary equipment (deep sand bed, refugium, skimmer, etc. in the same space). It is possible to enclose the winter. What do you guys think about the feasibility of doing a large tank outside in northern Cali? My wife might actually go along with this -- none of the humidity and salt water spill issues that were a problem when we had the big tanks inside our home in Philly. Thanks for your help. I have been out of the hobby for about five years -- any new insights on lighting, skimmers, etc. would also be helpful.

There are few outdoor set up here in southern California
You should visit Steve Garret acropolis to get some idea since his corals are one of the best
and its sunlight!
