i have a theory on south florida
back around the last ice age the great barrier reef was just like florida. exposed dead coral rock and the coral was growing further down around it. rainwater was eroding caves and holes in the limestone and when the water rose again the corals recolonized it into what it is now.
florida is a sleeping great barrier reef. all the calcium is already accumulated here for the massive reef that once was here and will be here again when the water returns in a hundred years or so depending on how long it takes the sealevel to rise.
interesting to think about.
