Southdown sand equivalent?

Are you opposed to running silica based sand in your tank? I know back when I was up on things, it was looked down upon by the masses, but Im pretty sure some of the experts stated that it doesnt release silica at any rate that can be harmful. Im not up on the current status of that debate, but if your willing to take the risk, there are all kinds of sands available locally for the cheap :D

Also, I forgot the name brand, but WalMart carries a 'playsand' that comes in different colors. Thay had 'natural' that was a little brown for a reaf tank, but the 'white' actually didnt look fake. I think underwater, it could look great, especially if you mixed a little rubble in it.

Oh, and FWIW, you run some of the same risks with silica sand in FW tanks (silica fed algaes, etc..), but Ive never had a problem with it. Ive collected a ton of used sand from locals over the past couple of years, but if I need to supplement any at all, Ill be using my Lowes silica sand in the fuge......

That was the thing about Southdown...it wasn't a silica sand. It was calcareous, and the same exact product that was in the bagged oolitic aragonite you bought at pet shops.

Peace,

Chip

I'm sure you need more than this, but I am getting ready to take down a tank that has a 20lb bag of Live Sand in it. You are more than welcome to the sand.

Yeah, I know. Thats why I asked this.....:wildone:

The WalMart sand I mentioned wasnt silica based, but I dont think it was calcareous either. It was some other inate neutral material.

How long has the tank been up, Rick, and when are you taking it down? My filter for the tank will be here by Friday.

Peace,

Chip

Not long, just a couple of months. It was the tank I used to "keep things alive" until the new tank was ready. I needed to take it down 2 weeks ago, but can do it anytime. Just let me know if you want it.

If I dont do it in the next week or two, my wife may shoot me though. :)
