Southdown Sand

Hello,

I just ordered a 240 gallon and two 100 gallon tanks from t enecor and will need quite a bit of sand. Is it ok to use the following Southtown/Old Castle brand of sand

http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-131422/.4CUFT-WHT-Play-Sand/Detail

It obviously says not for aquarium use, but I have found information that says its perfectly fine for aquarium use (wetwebmedia.com). So is this the same stuff that is great for reef tanks?

Thanks,
James

I think people found this different than the other Southdown Sand that they were getting from Home Depot. I don't think it is as good as the original stuff. Then again I think people don't really care if it is Silica based or not. I guess it depends on whether or not you want buffering.

I did the play sand from HD. I think it was the southdown but it did say it did not have any silica. Now I wish I bought reef grade with he biggest grain size possible. I have no PH or algae problems my trouble is the play sand is so small it get blown all over my rocks and coral to easy. I hope to down the road start replacing it slowly. That is the only trouble I have had. I did mix it with a few bags of live sand to help the cycle.

Thanks reefers! I'm going to use this for ~ 3-4 inches of base sand, with ~1 inch of 1-2 mm grain size reef sand on top.
