I usually get two smaller heaters instead of one big one to fit my sumps. It has the added bonus of offering you some protection in case one of the heaters fail since it is less likely that a smaller heaters would be able to cook your tank.
Titanium heaters that have or need external controllers like a Ranco or many other aquarium controllers that are out now are generally more compact. There are plastic ones out there but personally I stay far away from anything that has it's main heating element covered in plastic(epoxy). Two different brands have had major (catastrophic) issues with that style.
