Spawning in display

Hey gang,
I am purchasing a spawning pair of clowns from a friend, and was woundering if I put them in my display, (I know they will spawn), but if I put in a tile or flower pot what are my chances of putting them into a diffrent tank to raise them, what if they lay the eggs on the live rock, I belive live rock isn't good to keep with larvea. Please help me, I want to breed them just also I want them in my display.

Thanks,

Well I have been doing research on rearing clownfish as soon as I become involved in this hobby- What you will need is a rearing tank and you want to use a clean small marble tile (easiest to remove), now it is not garenteed that they will lay eggs on it. But if they doyou need to have LIVE baby food ready and a rearing tank set up. then you VERY CAREFULLY pick up the tile while the flow in the tank has been stoped and you place it into a tupperware to transport it to the rearing tank.

My $0.02

Would like to see what others say.

so what are you going to do w/ the fry? you don't have a grow out system?

Can you breed in the display- sure. By putting a tile in their will you guarentee they will lay on it- nope. if they lay the eggs on the nearby rock, and you want to raise the fry-you'll have to remove the chunk of live rock- pretty simple. Or do what a number of people have done- the eggs hatch in 4-7 days after laying, try to capture/siphon out the fry when they hatch. Its alot of work and you always miss fry, but you'l have something

Slatyfishy123,

You can always capture the larvae after the hatch in the evening as Frank says, I've been doing that for a beautiful pair of ocellaris in a 105g that insist on laying their nest on the glass (going to move them to a smaller tank shortly though, as I'm getting tired of it, if that gives you an idea of how fun it is  ) If you just want to raise a few clowns though, there's nothing wrong with keeping the breeding pair in a display IMHO. Of course this is all assuming they don't lay on a removable substrate, which is also possible.

Thanks for the replys, I think that covers my question, all I wanted to know is if I keep my spawning clowns in the display if I can take out the eggs, like on live rock, tile or flower pot.

Thanks

My true percs spawn about every 15 days like clockwork in my display (only a 55g, fairly heavily stocked). They don't seem to be too shy. Haven't tried to raise any yet, maybe this summer as a project for my son once I established some rotifer and greenwater.

below i use a small cpr in tank refugium. cut an opening and seperated the chambers with foam. i use a white moonlight to catch. works really well for me. good luck.

in the past ive had staggered spawning so what i did to resolve this problem was bring down my temps to 78, and kept lights on the night they normally would hatch(day 9). than on day 10 i delayed lights again for 2 more hrs past normal circadian and now 90% of them hatch within 1 hr after lights go out.

this is how ive been able to have high yield hatches in my display tank. ideally like you prob know is to remove the eggs prior to hatch.

You would be surprised how easily clowns will migrate to a rough faced tile to spawn on. Never had a problem getting clowns who were laying on the rocks to move to a tile.
