Special Cases: Which fish are sensitive to which medications?

Hey all,

So every once in a while I hear something thrown around like "____ fish are sensitive to copper" or "____ fish are sensitive to hypo". I know there are certain types of fish that do not take well to certain "treatments".

I would like to get a list going of what fish not to treat with what medications or methods. Help other people (and their fish) learn from your mistakes!

For me Cupramine has been safe to numerously classified "copper sensitive" fish. Although Cupramine is not like other copper medication, not as toxic.

I've used Chem-marin Stop Parasite to treat for ick and all fishes and inverts were fine after treatment. The instruction say to administer for 5 days but my experience found 8 days to be more efficient. Batting 1000 (3 for 3) in the last 3 years.

I use Prazipro to treat flukes and is the best stuff for it. My flameangels begin to show stress after 3 days and I've to start WC by day 4 and use carbon after 5 days.

Recently I purchased a bellus angel that came in with flukes and pop eye with worms around the eyes and after administering Mardel Maracyn II the eye healed completely.

I have had success with Cupramine, except that long exposure (more than two weeks) killed all my angels and butterflies. Tangs, damsels, firefish all OK.

Any more updates to this?

After some reading, it seems tangs are not recommended to be treated with copper either. Apparently they have something in their digestive tract that is effected by it. It seems it can be used, but is stressful on the fish.

Can anyone back that up?

gary faulkner: That is really strange. I QT all my angels in Cupramine for 6 weeks and never had an issue. What angels and butterflies?

Flames Angels, Yellow Longnose Butterfly.

I haven't had any problems with the Tangs but I have had both Angels and Butterflies in with the Tangs and the Angels and Butterflies just seem to kill over after a short while.

I help out at my LFS and we have the same problems there.

That is so weird. Is the test kit working correctly?

I've treated everything, flames, multicolor, potters, venustus, coloni, multibarr, hybrids, chrysurus, emperor, regal, mac's, blue face, blue spot, vanderloosi, etc. Also treated butterflies such as declevis, burgees, copperband and Red Sea semi's. Not to mention wrasses and clowns.
