specific rot question

now that I can get hatching occ. clown eggs 2 times per month I am having problems with Rots. out of my last hatch I had 2 make it to juvenile and i think the rest starved as they were gone about 4 days in. I have 2-5 gallons tanks with rigid airline, no airstone, fairly heavy airflow, temp set to 80. feeding nanno and also roti-rich from FAF. my question is how much to feed?
I feed the rotirich until the water turns brown and its hard to see the heater in the bottom of the tank. the Nanno I feed the same way till green and hard to see the heater, I feed mainly rotirich until I need them and then feed nanno during the day when needed for babies. cant seem to get enough production out of the 5 gallon tanks without crashing all the time.. too much feed?
how do the pro's here do it?

i'm certainly not a pro, but i believe the roti-rich turns the water bad pretty quickly. I used to have problems with my algea cultures and fed the roti-rich in it's place and it seemed the water turned yellowish-green and i started getting a lot of die off. Now I got my algea cultures figured out and I feed about a quart a day to a 10 gallon tank and i have rotifers like never before. Like I said, I'm certainly no expert, but thats what worked for me. Good Luck!

Are you putting rots in with rot tank water?

Airflow need to just be breaking the surface. Fry can be smashed around with heavy flow.

Also need to be sure you have no corner where fry can get caught. They will die from fear/stress/low fo energy trying to get out.

I would get Joyce's book I sure learned alot.

Hi everyone,
thanks for the responses, it is in the rot tanks that I'm having the problems. I do have Joyce's book and still having problems. does anyone use the rotifer floss that can be found on line? I bought some but was wondering as far as application vertical in tank? cut to fit bottom of tank? I agree that the roti-rich is fouling the water but I have the ammonia badges in the tank and no ammonia and they still die. Is instant algae as nutritous as Nanno?
thanks for all the help everyone. the breeder bug has bit me.

Cut the feeding, I use a similar product, whats your concentration of rots? How much are you dosing? Until you cant see the heater is too much I think.

IA is nano as well as others.

Hi Ediaz,
as far as concentration of rots I don't know, I try to harvest every day or two and feed enough so they clear the water in about 8 hours. On Nanno I can grow rots no problem but wanted something not so time intensive to grow. so tried roti rich and I think your right, fed way to much. is IA good enough to enrich with or should I keep Nanno running for the final feeding prior to giving to the fish?
thanks for your help,
Brian

FWIW I use IA exclusivley both in the rotifer cultures and the larval tanks with good results. I harvest 20% of the rotifers every 12 hours, if I don't need them I return them to the culture and call it a water change  I try to add just enough IA so that it nearly clears in 12 hours but not completely. Sometimes it's a crapshoot as the rot density fluctuates. Not very scientific but it works for me. I have tried drip systems a few times for a more even algal concentration, it just wasn't worth the extra effort in terms of rot density.
