Spend the $26

I am writing this post to share my experience this past month with "recharging" Purigen.

First off, I want to say i absolutely love PURIGEN because it makes my water crystal clear and does a fantastic job helping with stabilizing water parameters. Purigen is the only media I run in my system because I believe keeping things simple and having patience is a great formula for success with this hobby.

Last month I decided to take action on one of the selling points Seachem has for Purigen, Recharging.
(For those who do not know, after purigen has run its course in your tank and starts to change colors, you can soak it in plain bleach followed by primer, and you can reuse it.) I was extremely nervous about doing this. So I read and re read the instructions on how to properly recharge this product. I purchased the correct type of bleach, Seachem's Prime, and I already have plenty of RO/DI water. I followed the instruction to a T, as I have with everything else with this hobby. The very next day after adding the "recharged" purigen, I noticed the water was somewhat cloudy (I did not think much of it because I had just completed my weekly 13.8% water change and sometimes the sand gets stirred up), later that afternoon I noticed my xenia had stopped pulsing, and the next day my powder blue had lost some color and he began to show "white spots" on his skin. From the time I have been in this hobby, I knew these were signs that something was stressing out my livestock. The only thing I did differently from my weekly maintenance was recharging purigen. I immediately took out the recharged purigen and purchased a brand new container. 24 hours later my powder blue had an absolutely beautiful color, my xenia was pulsing, all the zoa's were open and the water was crystal clear again.

I know there are probably a good amount of people out there who completely disagree with me and have had success with this process. Well, good for you. Maybe I completely missed one of the 3 or 4 steps (I didn't, but okay). We all spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on new equipment, livestock, salt and much more. In my opinion, you are absolutely crazy to not spend $26 on new purigen. Everyone looks for ways to cut corners to save money and there's nothing wrong with that. Please do not let this be one of the corners you cut.

I've used purigen on a tank before. I was always skeptical about trying to recharge and reuse it, so I never did. The directions are very specific and there are even a couple caveats as well when recharging. Not worth it, IMO.

That's odd. Have been using Purigen for 10 years and have always regenerated it. Because, for various reasons, we have two units. One in the tank and one being held for use after regeneration. It does loose about 10 percent effectiveness with each regeneration.

Puritan is a product that cleans water? Like activated carbon? I'm new never heard of it. Ive used activates carbon occasionally per recommendations.

Purigen removes organics from the water before they can break down into things more harmful to your tank, like ammonia. In some ways it does similar work to a protein skimmer.

A lot of people have started using purigen instead of carbon because people describe as "carbon on steroids". Lol. They are both good though and it can't hurt to run both. They both work very well

used Purigen amongst numerous tanks over the years without any issues. Planted freshwater, discus, fowlr, and reefs. Never had any issues but I had a rotation going and as such units would be able to dry and buffer as needed between uses.

Just ordered some to try. I was using GAC in a media bag placed in the filter sock, can this be used the same way? I like that this doesn't need to be replaced as often as GAC.

That sounds like a good idea....I think i should put mine in the filter sock or does it not works as well once the filter sock starts to get too encrusted with gunk....or the gunk constantly touching the bag makes it to...wear down faster? Right now I just have it in sump in the skimmer/down pipe filter sock section....

You guys probably won't believe this...but I went to check out my tank right now..the purigen been in tank for 4 hours or so...

my tank has night light led's on....and i turned on some room lights....my water looks crystal clear. In fact...it looks like there is no water. There is a clarity that I've not seen in a long long time.

I cannot wait until my light cycle comes back up tomorrow to full brightness so I can see the difference.

I can literally see the back wall of tank, my powerheads on the backwall and the blades spinning within them with crystal clear HD detail with just my ambient light and night led.

Thinking of giving it a try . Can u run it in a reactor with pads on top and bottom or do u just use a filter sock ?

I'm a fan of Purigen, but I also ran Poly Bio-Marine Polyfilter also. Both were suggested by my LFS to help control NO3. This LFS was the best game in town back in the 90's and recommended by all the Reefers in town. Something that came to light recently, basically because I've been on auto pilot for a long time, is that Purigen has no effect on heavy metals, just organics. The Polyfilter does. This came to light during a GAC thread. I haven't changed my mind, just sort of forgot. FYI

Update- Purigens been in for a few hours. Water is completely crystal clear, I wish I would've tried this sooner!
