spill proofing my stand

I wanted to use some of that rubber roofing material, but it stinks like an old tire and I van only find it in 50 foot sheets. The stand has a bottom, so there is a tray that can hold water in case of spills. I have a plumbed back up for a full on failure and overflow. I'm just looking to contain any potential drips, spills, salt creep etc..and protect my hardwoods.

Any ideas?
Thanks

If you're talking about inside the stand, I used a rubber membrane used in the bottom of tiled shower floors. You can find it in the plumbing section of Home Depot. As for under the stand between it and the floor, I use a vinyl mat. But that is meant to go over carpet.

How big are those washing machine catch pans. ? They have a drain fitting on them you could plumb to the crawl space or basement.

Glenn, does that stuff stink like a rubber tire? Oh and I meant the inside of the stand.

Chris, I've got a wacky sump set up. Not sure a boot tray would do it. But I did consider it for sure.

I don't think so. It smelled like vinyl to me. If you have a hardware store nearby that carries it, you can smell it. They carry it on a roll like carpet. You order only as much as you need.

I laid it flat then stapled several inches above the floor. I suppose it could be glued. You'll have double folds in the corners.

It has helped limit the water on the floor from a skimmer overflow I had when I was running the skimmer externally. Would have stored more, but the lip for the doors would not allow me to run it up the wall very high.

Here is a link to my 90 build. There is a picture looking down inside the stand. The grey is the membrane.

if you're just looking to handle random drips, salt creep and other general tank crud, why don't you give the inside of the stand a few coats of sealant and caulk the seams? Is the back of your stand open? if so, you could run a piece of 1x4 along the bottom, seal and caulk that and you could handle more than just a few random drips.

FRP (the white stuff)the inside of the stand

Caulk the seams and you've got a waterproof pan.

My old base was sealed up good enough that when the 75 sprang a leak that it filled and proved that my LG 4 was in fact submersible, contrary to Little Giants literature.....

I've used black rubber pond liner. I staple it 4 or 5 inches up the side. I've seen it hold 40 gallons of water when I had a power outage. Saved the guys carpet. But when power went back on, his Barricuda pump was submerged and fried. So that wasn't the greatest result.

Corners were sealed with Liquid Nails, but all that went out the window, when "WE" (wrasseman) had to remove the back of the stand to get it in the house.

I'm thinking I like the pond liner idea because I don't think my wife, 8 mos pregnant, with super pregnancy sense of smell, will tolerate painting inside the house. And taking it outside just ain't an option!

Cully, I varnished the hell out of the bottom of my stand and then layed a layer of plastic on the bottom of it and set a cut-to-fit sacrificial piece of carpet on top of that, then put my sump tank on the carpet. Any spills from me working around in there are easily contained that way. Can't wait to see what that piece of carpet looks like in a few years :D

Went to Lowes today and the only thing I could really find was a shower pan liner. Heavy. Rubber. Perfect. EXCEPT!!!! It smelled like a rubber blow up doll....er...I mean inflatable raft. If I went with this, do you think it would de-smellify if I left it outside for a week or so?

The other options of painting and sealing will stink too, but that, IME is self limiting.

The stand was such a nightmare to get inside (including partial deconstruction ) that taking it outside to seal and paint, is NOT an option.

i just used regular latex house paint and used silicone around the edges. i had my external skimmer leak a couple gallons, the water just sat there till i sopped it up.

I didn't notice it once it was in the stand. But I'm not as sensitive to it, so I may not be the best judge for you.

Got the clearance from the Mrs to paint in the house. Looking like a nice paint and some caulk is going to be the method of choice. Thanks for the pointers guys!
