Brian, You sure that is Ricordia, I have a piece that looks similar to the picture and splits about twice a year, mine is a green metalic hairy mushroom.
From my observations ricordia usually forms a second mouth within the polyps way before it starts splitting, from there the splitting process is very slow, sometimes even months.
The mushroom on the other hand is a more quickly split and starts as a melting bubble gum, actually allowing the weight of one side pull on the other, I usually cant even tell were is it going to break cause thee is no mouth form yet, the whole process takes about 3 weeks.

question for you
i had a green hairy mushroom split just like u described rogger,
took over 2 weeks to split completely

then the 2 halves seemed fine for a couple of weeks and then they both disintigrated.
any idea what could have caused the death after the seemingly ok split?

Auryn, sometimes this mushrooms split due to stress, the only thing I could think of is that they may have also die do to that stress, But this is just pure speculation
